I just got a new Mac Mini running Mavericks and intend to use it with my Ipad IOS 7 as the monitor.
I loaded the Air Display drivers into the mini and downloaded the Air Display app to the Ipad.
I used my LCD TV via hdmi to have a monitor to do the setup.
Works great....until I try to start it up without a monitor plugged into the mini.
I can unplug the monitor once I am running but at the next startup it won't work withoutnthenmonitor physically attached to the mini.

I have Mirror turned on to make the ipad show the desktop because without it I get the screensaver on the ipad with no dock....making the ipad an extension of the monitor.

Am I missing something. I didn't think the mirror would be dependent on the physical presence of the monitor.

you need to set it up as a headless system. check out the macminicolo website. they sell the adapter but you could make it yourself. just google it :D

visited that site but cannot see where using the mac mini as a server would be help to me, since that is not what I am doing.
Any other thoughts that are more specific?

I sent a note to Avatron but have not heard back yet.

MV, I finally found the article on making the dongle to fool the mac mini into thinking a monitor connected. Thank you!

I am running my Mac Mini with my mini iPad as the display using Air Display from Avatron.

I used a 100 ohm resistor (I couldn't find an 85 ohm as the article suggests) and here are the results:
When I start the Mac Mini with the dongle, I get an incomplete screen on the iPad...Wave & top tool bar but no dock. When I force the mouse to the bottom of the screen, the dock appears, but I cannot open all of the apps.
If I pull out the resistor from the dongle, the full resolution appears and all screen operations are perfect.
If I re-insert the resistor, the screen goes back to being income, eye and unresponsive.
If I allow it to go into sleep mode, everything comes back normally.
Any thoughts?

Anyways...there is a bit of a lag in response. Coupled with the Bluetooth keyboard it is a little annoying but nothing I cannot deal with to have an extremely tiny footprint on my desk! I have a strong wifi network at home.

I look forward to picking up an older iPad to use as a display which is considerably larger than my mini-Ipad. Everything is relative!
I see that they"re all over the place for about $100 in good condition so the search is on for a good candidate.

Thanks again for the help...you got me up & running and I now have enough space on my desk for.....PAPER...!

i'm happy i could help :D
i do think that the issue may be with the difference between the 85 and 100 ohm resistors. try and find a 85ohm one and see what happens.

radioshack/source should have something like that. if not go to a electronics store that sells to electricians :D
