Mini and Retina

Likely Apple, or somebody, will come out with a "Retina" monitor at some time. Can a Mini actually power such a monitor? What model or specs in general would be required to drive a monitor of this type?

This would be for photography and light video at the high end, not games and such if that matters.

I think it would require an OS update to take advantage of a Retina display. Retina Mac laptops have a System Preference where you can adjust the pixel density. A Retina MBP displays icons, text, window bars, menus, etc using twice the number of pixels as normal.
If you don't tell the OS to do that, then you'll just have standard size screen objects, which will appear half the size!

The Mini is limited in the size of monitor it can display, however. I'm not sure it could drive a large Retina display.

Is it likely that Apple will code support for third-party Retina external displays? Not unless they make one too!

Thanks for reply. I was thinking that there would have to be a new ultra-rez monitor to go with the upcoming new Mac Pro. Maybe it would be iMac technology, but that would be a stopgap measure until retina (or even higher resolution) monitors become available.
