Mini as Server?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but if I am trying to set up a Mac Mini primarily as a media server accessible over the internet, would I need the Server version of Lion, or would the regular be enough?

And I think, but not quite sure, that would be accomplished by creating a VPN?

Thanks for indulging my naivety.
