Just checked out the options for the 13" MBA.

I was astonished to see you could order a mini display port adapter for the MBA.

From what I have seen the MBA doesn't have a mini display port.

Displays have to be connected through a Thunderbolt adapter.

Will there be a Thunderbolt to VGA adapter???

From http://www.apple.com/thunderbolt/

"because Thunderbolt is based on DisplayPort technology, the video standard for high-resolution displays, any Mini DisplayPort display plugs right into the Thunderbolt port. To connect a DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, or VGA display, just use an existing adapter."

The Thunderbolt connector is physically the same as a Mini DisplayPort connector and can be used to connect a MDP display with a regular MDP cable. That's why they offer MDP adaptors for the new MBA; just use them.

So a thunderbolt port and a mini display port have the same shape?

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to plug the mini display port adapter into the Thunderbolt port...

Yes they are the same shape, the difference is the microchip inside the cable.

Let's say someone wants to connect an external hard drive and a monitor.

Thunderbolt is daisy-chainable like FireWire...

How would one actually do it?

DisplayPort devices would need to be at the end of the chain. So you'd have it like so:

MBA <-> Drive <-> Display.
