My Core i7 iMac should get here some time last next week.

In the meantime I've got an external monitor that has DVI that I'd like to attach and use as a second monitor with my iMac.

However, I'm new to all this display port stuff.

I found a mini display port to DVI cable at monoprice for like 8 bucks or so.

I was going to pick it up, but wanted to check on here first to see if anyone knows if this will work or if I'd run into any problems.

Is anyone else running a second monitor on their new iMac via display port to DVI?

This works fine on my mid-2009 Mac mini -- it didn't work on my iMac, but that's because the DisplayPort is bad. You should be just fine.

I'm breaking out from my i7 27" going from the mini display port to DVI (using my TV as secondary monitor). Then from DVI to HDMI. Works perfectly.

Doing this as I had a DVI to HDMI cable that I used on my old Mac Pro. Figured I'd buy a cheaper Minidisplay port to DVI converter than a whole other 10m Minidisplay port to HDMI cable.
