Mini-dvi adapter

first off I'm very happy with my purchase.

But I do have some serious beef with regards to this "mini-dvi" baloney. I mean; every laptop on the market has a VGA port so that we can attach a projector. Why does Apple have to be awkward and expect us to spend $30 for an adapter?

They used to include them with powerbooks. Now they decided to make a few bucks and sell you only the ones you want.

But with the VGA-out port can you connect to a regular TV? I mean an old-fashioned tube TV. Yes they are still out there. The mini DVI port allows us to do that easily, I don't think it's so easy on other laptops. I imagine it is possible to get an adapter for VGA to RCA (regular tv) but I'm sure it would cost as much as the Apple one. The modularity is one of the reasons I got a mac, but that's just me.

Seriously? I love the mini video out thing they've got going. Anything to make the laptop smaller is a plus in my book.

The little adapters aren't cheap, sure, but I think it's worth the minor hassle.

The MacBook Pro includes a full size DVI port. It's only the MacBook which doesn't have one. The iBook used to have a mini port too.

With the MacBook, you are guaranteed to spend at least $20 on a adapter (or possibly $40 or $60 if you need more than one), but with any other PC employing a standard VGA or DVI port, you probably won't need an adapter at all, or if you do, they cost less than $5 to $10.

Well, maybe your average ****** Dell will come with the VGA port built it, but who evenwants VGA anyways? Its old fashioned and an analog signal. The mini-dvi port allows for a smaller computer and better graphics, since it is DVI and not VGA. If spending the $19 on the adaptor is too expesnive for you, then go purchase a $399 Dell with its built in VGA port and be happy that you don't need to spend 19 more on an adaptor. You bought a Mac, it isn't your typical windows pc box, it is better and you will find that it may cost you more money....if you can't handle that then don't deal with it.

try going to a client without the silly vga out and all they have is an old projector that takes vga. hmmm ... old-fashioned as it may seem, but people still use them.

While that is completely true, I would still rather have DVI built-in, and occasionally use an adapter in scenarios like you mentioned.

Although, having to use an adapter for absolutely everything because you only have mini-DVI does get old.

i think you misunderstood the issue. we do like the DVI output. what the original issue was the mb didn't come with an extra vga out like any other "pc"-type laptops or even come with the adaptor for free.
