mini-DVI to HDMI

There are some adaptors for older mini-DP macs that marry mini-DP and a USB audio connection to output both audio and video over HDMI.

Does anyone make an adaptor that marries DVI video to audio in the same way?

I've got a 2008 20" iMac that I'd like to drive the TV off, and my TV makes a terrible hum when you take audio from the 3.5mm input instead of HDMI. The iMac only has mini-DVI for video-out.

You could get a 3.5mm to RCA or Toslink adapter to get from another port in the TV. I am not aware of an adapter you described.

Mini DVI does not carry sound and only the 2010 and 2011 Macs carry audio over Mini DisplayPort.

Thinking about it... mini-DVI to component isn't too hard. Would the video look all that worse than VGA?

Yes, and No.
That's the reason why I recommended looking for a USB sound card or taking a look at that guide, as it offers alternatives, for instance the option to use the digital out of your Mac, especially if you have a digital (optical in) on your TV or HiFi.
But I don't have a TV anyway, therefore I might be out of the loop, especially since this question doesn't get asked here.
Or maybe you could use a different RCA cable, as maybe yours is faulty?

And what is it with missing pronouns and proper conjugated and used verbs?

Seems that component isn't as easy as we suspected (you may want to update your guide, simsaladimbamba)

See, Apple's mini-DVI port includes all the pins for doing the legacy analogue stuff... but their mini-DVI to full-DVI adaptor does not - it ends in a DVI-D port.

The D in DVI-D stands for digital, referring to the lack of pins necessary for those juicy analogue signals.

So, step one is finding a mini-DVI to DVI-I adaptor that actually passes through all the pins (some posts on this forum mention adaptors that, while they have the analogue pins at both ends, don't bother with actually connecting them... so dumb >.< )

It takes mini-DVI video, audio from USB and outputs both over mini-displayport.

The mini-displayport can then be turned into HDMI cheaply and easily.

The price means I'm basically better off buying a new TV, mind you, but still - it's possible!

Also, it leaves you with a USB port on the dongle, so it doesn't actually use one up. Pretty neat, Kanex!
