Mini HD Question

New convert here - liked my 13 inch MBP so much that I went out and got a mini as well.

OK - after I got the mini I put 4gb of RAM in and also a 500GB 7200RPM seagate drive. Well now I am considering putting in a 80GB X25 SSD to run OSX and Windows 7 and use the 500GB for applications etc. The 500GB would be hooked up via an external enclosure and usb powered. Is there anything I would need to be aware of running my apps and data off an external drive?

I think it would be speedy with the X25 - but the price was steep so I am considering returning it - what are your thoughts.

This is the family machine - photos, banking, email, surfing etc.

What was the cost of the X25? I was just wondering... The question is do you really need the little speed on boot times would see worth it. :/

If you're really concerned about speed shouldn't you connect your external HD via FW800?

That said, I was contemplating a similar setup, but decided I was better off just going with a fast internal HD and waiting 6-months to a year for the price to drop on SSDs.

I agree with rkdiddy, using an external USB drive will probably make everything seem SLOWER when it comes to running applications, and not only that, but USB may also cause spikes in your CPU usage that FW800 wouldn't. That being said, Dan Frakes wrote an interesting article that highlights some of the benifits of FW800 (article)

FW800 is faster than USB 2.

If you are the least bit handy at hacking you can get a SATA to eSATA cable and snake it outside the case and run an external eSATA drive.

but why? isnt osx fast enogh for you? Its going to be even faster with snow leopard.

So bottom line is to leave the 500GB inside and return the X25 80GB? Seems that would be the easiest decision?
