So... the iMac has a Mini PCI-e slot, occupied by the wireless card that can be used for other purposes such as additional SATA ports.
see this post.

This got me thinking. There are mini PCI SSDs. SSD benefits and still 3 more sata ports inside for
actual storage.

Anybody know if it's been done yet?

What about more firewire ports via pci-e?

AFAIK Mini PCIe works like normal PCIe x1 so that would mean 250MB/s if it's 1.x and 500MB/s if it's 2.x (I think it's 2.0).

Well, that should work then. I've read about the mini PCIe SATA adapter in another thread and someone mentioned 50MB/s for the port in the '08 Pro.
Not sure if this applies for the iMac as well.

I don't know how is that in iMac, but some computers, typically laptops have somewhat crippled mini pci-e slot keeping only USB 2.0 connectivity.

But I would be very interesting to know whether the SSD can be added to my iMac by replacing Airport card.
