I have been backing up my 2009 Mini for 3 months, but now my son is getting the Mini, and I have my MacBook I just cleaned and re-loaded all the software from scratch, now since the Mini has all the Music and files, I need to restore the Mini Backups to the MacBook, but will that work, since they are different machines, also will the MacBook see the Mini backups?

I have not tried to do this, but before I make things potentially ugly, I would prefer to see if anyone has done this and if it all works.

Thanks

Launch Migration Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder (in Applications). It will walk you through connecting the machines and selecting what you want to transfer.

Otherwise, just you can just drag the Music and Documents folders directly over if you already have the laptop setup and know exactly what you want to copy. Migration Assistant is easy but paints with broader strokes.

So if I use time machine's migration to restore information on another hard drive will it write off the information there or just add to it?

I have photos in iphoto and need to add a previous iphoto library.

dreamsandart, just use a flash drive to transfer the photos or connect the two Macs to the same network and share the files. You cannot use migration assistant for that function.

I opened migration assistance and saw right away this is not the way to go. Got off the phone with Apple and they had me jumping here and there, and in the end it all didn't work out.

So just dragging and dropping to another drive and then back to a clean iphoto seems the way to go.

Thanks
