Mini warranty voided w/ diy memory upgrade?

On the phone with Apple today, they told me that my Mac Mini 2010's applecare warranty would be voided if I upgraded the memory myself...

I tried to question the guy, but he insisted i needed to bring it to an Apple store and pay them to upgrade it.

I told him that this was a very strange change of events for Apple, if true, told him it was an interesting problem because going back ten years to the Tibook I had, I know even that Powerbook was "customer upgradable memory" though you had to remove the keyboard and do other things I now can't recall.

What do you guys think of that?

The guy must be confused. Apple's own support site says you can replace it yourself. Not to mention the fact that they made memory replacement dead simple on the unibody Mac minis.

This bad advice has been frequent on the boards...It's wrong, and the representative needs to get his / her information correct. A couple of threads also indicate that Mangers are giving out this type of mis-information.

It was so crazy. I did ask for a web page so I could check out what he was saying... he said he'd send it to me but did not.

He did send me something, I do intend to say something about this.

I glad you are going to report this...Apple need to get a grip on things of this nature..I guess folks will visit a site like this, confirm that it's okay and then forget about it..They will sit up and take notice of you too. I provide feedback on all contact I have with them, They need to weed out these people.

If Apple didn't want you to upgrade your own RAM if you wanted to, there wouldn't be a 6 page step by step guide in the user manual.

Obviously - it starts with the "if you break it, we're not going to fix it" warning - but you'd have to have some sort of special talent to screw up a mini memory upgrade in the 2010 and newer versions.

I was under the impression that you COULD void the warranty if you BROKE something when upgrading.
