I am considering to make the jump to Mini and make it a dedicated HTPC, but I am not finding one answer to the question I have. Basically, we all know that OSX doesn't pass audio via MDP port, but has anyone tried it with Windows?

It is called a mini DISPLAY port for a reason.. there is nothing you can do that will make it pass audio through that port....

The full-size DisplayPort connector certainly allows for passing audio as well as video, although it's optional as to whether or not a device manufacturer actually uses it to send audio alongside the video.

The Mini DisplayPort has the same number (and designation) of pins as the full-sized DisplayPort, so Apple hasn't removed any connections as a result of shrinking it down. Hence there's presumably no barrier to implementing audio via MDP beyond Apple's own choice.

ok, that still doesn't answer my question. Can you pass audio if you install Windows 7 on a mini?

How about this, on any of the Mac lines, Mini DisplayPort will not output audio even if you install Windows 7 (I am not aware of any driver/support that allows audio to pass through).

okay, so this was already tried before?

It is unknown if the hardware in the Mini supports audio over DisplayPort, but certainly if it exists Apple has disabled it. No surprise there, given Apple's history of such disablings. I also doubt that Boot Camp has drivers for it, either. So unless you can find Windows drivers that would work with Apple's technology (highly unlikely), then it's not going to work over Windows, either.
