Mini with 8GB Ram

I understand the new Mini's can work with 8GB ram. Why isn't that an option when you buy one? People seem to upgrade to 8GB with no problems.

You can only buy the 2.66 with 4GB ram so you would have to replace 2 sticks with 4GB each. I guess sell the 2 2GB sticks on eBay or ?

Even though they will work with 8GB RAM, Apple doesn't officially endorse it - that's why you can't buy them that way from Apple. If you do the self upgrade, I wouldn't ebay the original RAM...if you ever need to take your machine in for service, you may not get your 8GB of RAM back.
 
It officially supports only 4GB but unofficially 8GB. Apple has done this several times before, e.g. 2008 iMac handled 6GB fine though 4GB was the official maximum

Have you ever been inside a computer before? If you have, it's pretty easy but if you are a first-timer, then the suspension may make it harder. There are great tutorials around the net so if you follow one step by step, you can't go wrong
 
How are the 24" iMacs running... Any issues?

I've been toying with the idea of getting a 27" but all the screen and hardware issues concern me and I've decided to give them a pass. That's why I'm considering a mini.

I see that some of you have 24" iMacs. Have you had any issues with them. I guess they might be a later generation then the first ones. Would I be correct in that assumption? The first generation of anything can be dicey as we are seeing with the 27"ers.

They are/were quite issue-free. Some normal dead/stuck pixel and uneven backlight issues but they are normal in all LCDs and are hardly noticeable in regular use.

That's encouraging... You can still find them new or open box... I might reconsider. Only problem is I REALLY like a 27" screen... :D That's what I would hook up to a Mini if I went that route...

That's weird they would swipe your ram... :eek: lol...

Well THAT's a marketing fopaw... You would think it would be attractive to some, like me, to pump them up to 8GB for things like photo editing etc...
 
One guess of why they don't offer it is because the Mac mini is a low-end machine, maybe they want you go iMac for more memory.

Just a theory.

It's not that they'd swipe it intentionally, but if you had a severe enough problem that they had to replace the logic board or entire unit, they'd look at your original specs and see your machine had 4GB RAM and that's what you would get as a replacement.

As to the 24" iMac question....I got mine as a refurb last June and (knocking on wood) I've had no problems with it at all.
 
The initial shipment of 2009 minis didn't fully support 8GB of RAM. There was a firmware update and they work fine now.

Not sure why doesn't update their specs.
