My mid 2012 w/SSD Mini has been running great for about 6 months. I moved it yesterday (didn't start it up after moving it). This morning, the monitor comes on, I see the apple logo and a spinning mark below it. It does not get to the logon and then shuts itself down.

The only thing I might have done is when I was moving it. When I picked it up to unplug the cables I mistakenly hit the power button and it started up. Quickly I pressed and held the power button until it turned off (like on a regular PC). It powered off and I moved it.

Anyone know how to resolve this? Can I try booting into safe mode some how? Or is there a way to determine if the SSD died?

**Update**
I booted to cmd+r and ran the verify disk. Said to run the repair disk. Ran repair disk, said can't repair and to reformat and reinstall.

This will be my first time doing this. Is reformatting really necessary? Can I just reinstall the OS ?

Thanks.

Does repair work in ANY operating system? A repair utility is really unnecessary because it NEVER works (at least I never saw it really repairing the system flawlessly). I suggest doing a backup and installing the system again from the scratch... good luck!

Ok, guess I will bite the bullet, and just start the re install.

Your point about repairs is true for the most part. Although I have seen it work "sometimes", file system repairs, on Linux servers I supported for a couple years.

I might be a bit late but you could try safe booting. Press shift at the very end of the chime and hold it until you see a progress bar. If you can boot into safe boot then you can run a few diagnostic programs, disk repair, repair permissions etc then try rebooting.

Thanks for that suggestion.

I did try to boot into safe mode by holding down the shift key from the tone but it didn't boot up any differently (still not making it to anything past the logo and spinning wheel).

I've done the reinstall. Now slow setting everything back up.

Thanks for the help. I'm glad the SSD didn't die. I wonder if it happened when I hard powered it off when I turned it on accidently... Oh well, if so need to be more careful.
