I currently have a 2012 Mini and a Tunderbolt Display. I have a secondary monitor plugged in using the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the Mini. Since I'm experiencing the occasional flicker using the HTML port, I decided to pick up a TB to DVI adapter and plug it into the TB port on my display. For some reason it doesn't work and the display just stays black and goes into power saving. Have anyone successfully plugged in a monitor using the MiniDispaly Port to DVI (Apple's) adapter to the back of the TB display. I know both the display and DVI cables are good since it works off the HDMI port on the mini.

Thanks

mac mini (T-bolt cable) T-bolt display (t-bolt/mini display to dvi cable) monitor

is this your setup? With the monitor on the end of the setup being dead.

Dumb questions but did you change the input on the monitor to tell it to use the DP port rather than the HDMI port?

Thanks

I use the Thunderbolt to DVI adapter for my Samsung Syncmaster monitor and it works perfectly.

Yep, that's the setup.

Since I was using an HDMI->DVI adapter and switched to a MiniDisplayPort->DVI, I didn't need to change the input on the monitor. I did, however, try that with no luck.

I haven't ruled out a problem with the TB port on the display. I'll probably put a call into AppleCare this week to see if they know of any issues.

Could you please check your Thunderbolt bus Port Status in Systems Information and see if it shows a device connected?

I have your set-up (different monitor) and my Thunderbolt bus Port Status in Systems Information shows "No device connected" and I'm wondering if this is normal.

From what I've read, you can ONLY plug in Thunderbolt data devices or a second Thunderbolt display to the Thunderbolt port on the TB display. You cannot plug in a minidisplay port monitor.

My Thunderbolt Bus status: No device connected
And I am reading that information off the screen that is working!!

On your setup is the adapter plugged into the back of the mini or to a TB Display?

I am using Apple part MB570z/A MiniDisplay port to DVI adapter. The adapter is plugged into the Thunderbolt output on my Mini and mates with the DVI Male end of the cable going to my Syncmaster 172W

Under Graphics/Displays ( also in system info )in the Intel HDGraphics 4000 it shows under Displays:

Syncmaster:

Resolution 1280x768@60 Hz plus other specs

Thanks for checking. I guess it must be normal to see "No device connected" if you are not connected from one Thunderbolt port to another Thunderbolt port.

There is no miniDisplay port passthrough from an Apple Display. If you connect your Apple Display directly to the mini, it will only pass through TB to the next device in the chain, not miniDisplay port. Read anantech's review of the new displays for the details--he tested it.

Your non-TB display might work if the first link in the daisychain is a storage device with two TB ports, then your TB display, then your non-TB display. The first link in the chain determines what passes through, as far as I understand but I have not tested it myself.

Most external storage devices with two TB ports *will* allow miniDisplay passthrough, though. (Not that that helps you...)

This may be where the problem is. The TB Display is connected to the Mini, and the second monitor is connected to the TB Display. I guess the easiest solution is to call Apple Tech Support and ask the question. I'll try to do it tonight and post back the answer.

It 100% won't work. It's only passing one display channel. The only way to get this setup to work is to put another TB device in the middle, like a hard drive or something, and have the non-TB monitor connected to that device instead.

For anyone interested, I put in a call to Apple Support over the weekend. The Thunderbolt port on the TB display does not support MiniDisplay adapters.
