I'm connecting my Mac to my home cinema system (Yamaha RX-V471) via HDMI (using mDP to HDMI adapter). However, when I play any video, all the audio comes out the rear speakers rather than the front.

I'm using VLC Player to watch the content.

Never had a problem like this. Need more details. If the video is a file, download media info and post the specs for starters.

Lots of questions. Do other files played on your Mac through your stereo play correctly? Does video played in other applications (Netflix, Hulu, DVD Player) play correctly? Does video from other sources (Xbox, PS3, Roku) play correctly through your stereo?

I managed to fix it by going into Audio MIDI Setup in Utilities, selecting the HDMI output and changing it from stereo to 5.1 surround.
