Minimize horizontal keyboard?

Typically when i'm texting i turn the phone sideways to use the larger horizontal keyboard. This can make reading replies difficult since the keyboard takes up so much room.

Usually when i receive a reply i click messages and then re-enter the message screen which minimizes the keyboard. I can then read my new message (and past messages on the full screen, then tap the input bar and bring up my keyboard.

Is there a way, from the keyboard, to minimize the keyboard without leaving the message screen?

All you have to do is tap the edit button on the conversation screen, which minimizes the keyboard.

It doesnt just minimize the keyboard it also opens up the edit functions like delete/forward ,clear all and select individual messages to delete.
