Minor glitches I keep getting

I keep getting a few little glitches I'd like to resolve

Mainly, I keep getting this annoying "pop" sound coming from my mac.
The exact same one where you go to save a file and click outside the save window.
It happens completely randomly.

As well as little things like my videos skipping forward to the beginning and the screen undimming itself.

I always get a little freaked out like someones inside my mac or something, I know it's incredibly unlikely but I get paranoid about this stuff, even though I have the firewall and anti-virus :rolleyes:

But if anyone has experienced any of these and knows a fix, i'd love to know it :D

It sounds like they are all unrelated issues. You just need to track down the reason for each, like making note of exactly what you're doing when you hear the "pop" sound. It also helps if you can give more information, such as what app you're using to watch videos and what you mean by the screen "undimming itself".

No one is inside your Mac, and you don't need anti-virus software to protect your Mac. There has never been a virus in the wild that runs on Mac OS X. The handful of trojans that exist can be easily avoided with some education and common sense and care in what software you install:

The pop sound happens all the time, the only application I really have open all the time is firefox. All the other applications I use tend to be on and off, but i'll make sure to note whats running when it makes the sound

as for the video skipping, allthough it seems to have stopped. It was on both YouTube and videos played in Quicktime.

And the screen undimming is just when the screen dims from inactive use, the mac will sometimes brighten the screen again as if I had typed a key or moved the mouse.



And I'm aware about macs being relatively safe :)
It's just in my nature to worry about these things even though I mostly know what I'm doing when it comes to avoiding malicious content of any kind.
And I always hear that Anti-Virus isn't necessary, but it's never any harm to have it :)

Glad you will remain unreasonable.
 
The pop sound could come from one of many sources: an email or IM notification, a sound effect on a website, a browser notification that a pop-up was blocked, etc. You'll just have to dig for it.

The screen brightening could be caused by something as simple as vibration from walking across the floor shakes your mouse enough to move it. Again, it'll take some digging to find the source.

As you said, these are minor events and nothing to worry about. Be sure to read the virus/malware info I posted. It will go a long way in easing your mind about such issues.

Actually that's a big misunderstanding, since running ANY Malvare & Anti-virus software will create a big burden on your CPU and memory usage.
ClamXav was using 150 ~ 200 MEGs of RAM running in background when I tried it...
Remember, it would defy logic if something running constantly in background & scanning your HD & applications and utilities WOULDN'T have any negative effects.
THINK a little before you write something mindlessly...

Also, if you want to waste processing power, consider running BOINC instead of an anti-virus.

I don't believe I asked for advice on that matter but thank you for explaining the obvious to me.
Ironically you criticize me for writing something without thinking it through without even thinking that I am possibly aware of what is hogging up CPU and memory on my machine.

I will admit I could have phrased what I meant by "it's never any harm" better, but my mistake for presuming the meaning was obvious.

Normally I'd appreciate someone trying to give me helpful advice, but the "THINK a little" line was unnecessary.

I'll just have to look around into what's causing these problems
