I've been wanting to switch from T-Mobile to Mint. Has anyone done that? It would same me $30 in a month.
I used to be a T-Mobile customer and switched to Mint for a while.

It’s the exact same network but you are on a lower priority tier than post-paid T-Mobile customers. Mint also heavily throttles to kbps speeds if you exceed their allotted amount of “premium data”. Their unlimited is also not unlimited. It’s capped at I believe 32GB or close to that. Most people, probably not a big deal, but heavy data users beware. That is partly why I am back on postpaid again.

Right. Price has nothing to do with contracts. They’re still month to month. You’re just paying a lot more because you’re also getting a lot more (priority data, better international rates, better “freebies”, etc.). Whether or not those are worth it is up to you, of course, but they’re still month to month.

The post-paid carriers “convince” you to stay with them by instead getting you to sign up for an EIP, where the price of your phone is added to your monthly bill. Those phones are typically locked, requiring the owner to pay the remaining balance in full before the phone is unlocked. That is very different from a formal cellular contract though. Cell contracts carried high ETF fees that never went down over time (like a phone EIP) and still applied even if you bought your phone outright and/or did a BYOD program. Phones sold under contracts were also not obligated to be unlocked. That’s part of why years ago you could buy the iPhone for $99, instead of $699 or however much it is per month: it was offset by the higher contract prices, the forced ETF that could easily be $600+, even if you’re just a week away from the contract ending, and the phones would never be unlocked to be used on other carriers.

Well, I mean, that’s just not true. Many MVNOs are a lower priority of data. The only few (in the US) that I’m aware of that offer a plan with the same the same level of data priority as post-paid are US Mobile, Cricket, Metro, and Verizon Prepaid. Those are also more expensive $40-60 price tier. Mint does not offer priority data on any of its plans and will be subject to deprioritization before postpaid T-Mobile customers are. They even say this on their website itself.

For some people, that doesn’t matter, but for others, that can be something important. There are reasons to use postpaid over any prepaid MVNO sometimes. It’s down to the user’s wants and needs; one isn’t inherently better than the other.

I need unthrottle data at all times and at all cost and can’t be having slow downs when I’m placing sports bets online.

As has been said, the install of the Mint Mobile app will allow you to install and activate an eSIM while connected to wifi on a new device. You can do that twice a year. After that it is $3 per a switch. I did a lot of flip-flopping betweeen the 14 Pro and 13 mini as I was trying to make up my mind and found that out the hard way. So if you are fickle like me, eSIM might end up costing you a few bucks. If you want to switch back to Android, first see if the phone you are getting does eSIM as well. If not, you can request a new physical SIM for $10, but that will deactivate your eSIM. Another $3 will always get you another eSIM if you decide to switch back.
 
have been on Mint for a week now, have had not slow downs or issues, in fact if anything its faster than Verizon...switching was easy via e sim, except kept getting a message about porting issue, but there was no issue.
I may switch my kids over now too given how inexpensive it it compared to Verizon and just how easy it is, and can just do apple care on the side. No brainer! its like 180 for 6 months for 3 lines versus $1000! With inflation, these changes make a big difference.

I've had Mint now for 4? 5? months - something like that. I dual e-sim it with Verizon. I have had no problems with Mint and for the most part it is on par with Verizon. It actually has complimented Verizon a few times meaning, when Verizon had no reception, I had good T-Mobile (Mint) reception. Only one time where we were in an area with only AT&T reception that I was out, lol.

Anyway, I've only experienced deprioritization once in a mall - where for a few mins I couldn't get any data then it started working again. Every other time has been on par with Verizon which really surprised me for a pre-paid service.

I paid for the entire year for something like $240 - for the 10GB plan. Been working pretty good. :D

My only issue with Mint is this…I paid for 3 lines for 6 months..in order to see how each of those lines are doing from the app on my phone I have to agree to automatically renew the plan. I am a cancer patient with multiple health problems. I won’t be automatically renewing anything.

I am going to have my son install the Mint app on his phone and see if he can track his data that way…if he can I will have my husband do the same…then when it’s time to renew everyone can do so individually….hopefully Mint will allow that to happen

Currently on Ultra Mobile. User visible and the others. You ( I ) get what you pay for. Deprioritizing is a thing for sure. Perhaps not so much when I was on USA Mobile 5G warp but on their LTE it was.
Same sentiments as others, if you rely on data for work get a postpaid plan.
 
Any truth to mint mobile causing more battery drain?
That’s just spreading FUD. It’s a carrier, not an app. No background process or anything that would peg your battery.

Battery drain will depend on signal strength. Low signal takes more work. So it can vary a lot from street to street. You are using T-Mobile’s coverage, so if you have consistent battery drain then you can take a look at coverage maps for ATT and Verizon and see if they are any better. I know Verizon let’s you test drive an eSIM for 30 days to test their network. Might be worth a try.

Also, 5G uses more battery than LTE, but it downloads faster, so may be a wash depending on usage. You can go into cellular settings and force it to be LTE only and see if that helps.
