Hello.
I have quite old LG TV 2012 55LM6700. TV is working quite fine and I am not planning to change it ... but the issue is that I want to stream or mirror video from my Apple devices. I have MacBook Air 2021, iPhon 15 Max and iPad Air.
I understand that the best option should be HDMI ... but I don't like idea to connect via cable.
I tried a few 'mirroring' app from App Store and LG ... but none of it was reliable and convenient and user friendly and etc.
Hence, could you recommend from your experience which app would you recommend for this purpose?
Thanks in advance

After contacting LG support, I was informed that there is currently no streaming application available for my specific model.

As a workaround, they recommended a USB-C to HDMI adapter.

While this solution does not provide a wireless connection, it may be a viable option to consider.

Buy yourself a used Apple TV HD for $50 and connect it to your LG TV. Stream and mirror over Wi-Fi using the Apple TV.

Sorry, what you meant by Apple TV HD? Is it adapter or you meant something different? I am not familiar with it … but it sounds to me like device that provides wireless connection between Apple devices and TV, correct?

Apple TV is a hardware device you connect to your TV (or AV receiver) via hdmi and you can stream via Airplay to it. It also has many apps available to play games, watch streaming apps etc. You can buy it from Apple stores and many other retailers.

not to be confused with appleTV+ (Apple TV Plus) which is apple's streaming service.
or the TV app on apple's devices.

Not sure precisely what you're wanting to see on the TV but if it's video files on your computer…and if that LG TV can download the Plex app…you could run Plex server on your Mac.

My old Samsung TV is still capable of this and I think it's older than your LG.

Well .. I am using Plex all the time but in this case I wanted to watch video that I was not able to download. I was able to watch it only on iPhone or iPad web site. Since it was not convenient I wanted to mirror it to TV.
Apple TV4+ sounds like good idea but since I am not interested in any additional services or apps .. I have bought Chromecast with Google TV. Hope it will allow me to mirror anything from Apple devices

The plex client on the appleTV is pretty good. The only thing it doesn't do is HD audio.

The Apple Remote will power on the TV and control it's volume.

I've got an older Chromecast device and it definitely doesn't accept streams from "anything"…meaning not every app on the iPhone…and even fewer from the Mac.

For my iPad and iPhone I use an app called "Web Video Cast" to get videos on websites to the Chromecast. Google Chrome is all you need on a Mac.

Never used Plex. I use a browser for streaming live online video, and the TV app to play my own movie/video library. I make them fullscreen, and 'swipe' between these 'mission control spaces' on my 55" OLED LG TV.

Typically, I will have one space with a Finder desktop and many small apps like mail, messages, and so on - a space with tabs with a news video stream, sports stream etc. - a space with my Pro Tools music production app - and one with Lightroom classic. All in fullscreen and I can swipe between them with two fingers on the magic mouse. So I'll be sitting watching a sports game, I get a new mail alert, swipe to the desktop space (or just cmd-tab to mail app), check the mail, all the time the game is running in the background.

This is with my TV set up and running as simply a mac monitor. I never use the LG as a TV. No need.

(I remember 10-15 years ago thinking; this is so stupid; moving between my TV and my mac to do different things - why can't I get mac and TV to 'converge' somehow? After a few years, I succeeded with my plan. Eversince, I have had everything going thru my mac.)

Likely I shouldn’t say “anything “ because I don’t have experience with it. I expected that everything I see on iPad using Chromecast I should be able to mirror on TV. Maybe my expectations are wrong

Folks,
I'd like to share my first experience.
I've bought "Chromecast with Google TV" device.
After that I realized than none of Apple device could stream directly to Chromecast. Well .. I installed on Chromecast app called "AirScreen". It 'emulates' AirPlay feature on Chromecast which allow to stream 'anything' from Apple devices.
Hence, now I have 2 options: 1. I could mirror my iPhone or iPad on TV screen and see on TV what I see on Apple device. 2. I start any video clip on iPhone or iPad ( I assume that most of it should work on Apple ), then mirror the device to TV and watch video on TV.
I don't have experience yet ... but first impressions are promising ..

If that scratches all itches for you, mission accomplished.

However, if you bump into some shortcomings/limitations, the earlier recommendations to buy an AppleTV (device) is the Maximum Apple-friendly way to make all things Apple get to any TV screen. Chromecast can scratch some itches... but AppleTV scratches ALL of them (for Apple tech-sourced stuff). I have one on every TV in my home. IMO- it may be towards Apple's best kept secret.

If the Chromecast doesn't work out, I'd recommend getting a Roku if you don't want to spend the money on an Apple TV. Even the cheapest $20 Roku model supports AirPlay exactly the same way as the Apple TV. Then you can mirror (or extend) your screen natively without having to use any apps. Never had any issues with mine.

Even with the Apple TV you might run into some issues. Some content doesn’t allow itself to be viewed on another device. Really annoying. Not a hardware/software issue. Licensing issue.

I used it for a few days. It’s far from perfect but still operational. Hence I bought annual subscription.
On a side note.,. I don’t think that quality will depend of the source I.e. iPhone,iPad or MacBook. I think it would rather depend on a server that was used. Also I did not find cases when I would need to mirror any app from device on TV. Hence, I have a question: I could stream either by mirroring e.g. iPad screen or another option is to cast from Chrome browser directly. Not sure which option would give better quality

I'm under the impression that if the iPhone/iPad app has a "cast" option built into it then what happens is the stream is shifted to the Chromecast device…and that Chromecast now takes on the load. Some (if not all) of the screen casting apps put the burden (and power usage) on the iPhone or iPad.

Google Chrome for macOS has casting built in and you can cast a tab and, most of the time when things work properly, the stream and processing burden are handled by the Chromecast (the macOS Chrome tab goes dark). This is my preferred method when there's no iPhone or iPad app with the "cast" option built in or if I just don't feel like using one of those.

Just get an Apple TV (even 4k on a non 4k tv delivers for that added speed oomph) already, anything less is subpar as you're finding out.
