I have MacBook Pro 13 inch 2019 model with intel processor. I use it in clamshell mode with Samsung 4K display via USB-C. When I do that, the laptop heats up considerably and I feel it becomes slower compared if I use it without internal display. Understandably driving external 4K display is more demanding. But I'm curious. If I connect Apple TV to the external monitor and mirror my MBP display that way, will it require less performance? I know it will probably lag but just from performance point of view?

If you have an Apple TV you should try it. Remember that AirPlay screen mirroring to an Apple TV maxes out at 1080p, that might limit the performance impact.
