My wife is a teacher and has a TV in her room. There is no wifi available in the room. She would like to use an ATV and her iPad2 to project what she has on her iPad such as Youtube videos. Is there a way to accomplish this? She has an iPhone 4 as well if we can use that in this design.

Any bright ideas will be appreciated.

You could use an Airport Express to create a network that the iPad and :apple:TV could both join. You don't need an internet connection to do that, you just plug in the AEx, wait for it to create the network and the devices to join, and you're off to the races.

But without an internet connection on the AEx, you might have trouble with YouTube videos, since it seems to be difficult to get you iOS device to join a wi-fi network (for purposes such as Airplay and mirroring) but use the cellular connection for data. Maybe it's better now, but the last time I tried that my devices (iPhone, iPad) wanted to use the wi-fi for data, since it was connected.

how is she going to project YouTube videos without wifi?

She will use her iPad 3G connection to reach YouTube.

the ipad really doesn't do that, since you can't set up routing tables, if you're connected to the wifi it will try to send/receive all data over the wifi.

I think I have decided on a solution

I am going to purchase a mobile hot spot through Verizon so that the iPad and the APT can connect to that to allow mirroring. That should work right?

But at that route, you are spending what $40+ a month + $99 for an AppleTV when a long HDMI cable (see monoprice.come) and a $30 HDMI cable out from the iPad would work.....

Yes the mobile Hot Spot would work to answer your question.

Apple Tv would fix smoothly :) Just buy one and let your wife enjoy AirPlay tho her iPhone,iPad,Mac or any other Apple device you got at home :)

i can create an adhoc network on my macbook and control my keynotes from my iPhone. even though i'm connect to the adhoc netwoek, my iphone is still connected to 3g, so it might work through an ipad too...fyi..

Agreed! You could get a 50' HDMI cable from monoprice, run through the ceiling tiles ( if they have tiles ) and plug directly into the iPad with the adaptor.
$40 for the cable
$30 for adaptor

Or Airport Express to create a hidden WiFi network noone else can see, add both devices to broadcast the iPad.
$100

"MiFi" at least mine was an upfront cost + the monthly fee
$50-200 up front
$20-50/month x 24 months since most contracts are 2 years.

I'd most likely go with the Airport Express myself to give me the freedom of moving around if needed.
