Well well well

I'm running 4.2 GM2 on the ipad and purchased a ATV2 today to try out airplay.

Now found out that only audio works and no video. So looks like the ATV2 needs a update.

The guy in the apple store told me that the ATV2 would be ready for airplay as soon as IPAD 4.2 was released.

This isn't true and apple seem to be misleading people

Anyone else feel this way

The apple employee IS RIGHT. It will work when 4.2 is RELEASED. You downloaded a PRERELEASE version. AppleTV has NOT yet been updated. It's not his nor apples fault for you not listening to what was said.

Rubbish. The Goldmaster will be the released IOS and it doesn't work.
You will need a update to the ATV2.

4.2 for the Apple TV has not yet been released.

Correct that's my problem.

The apple store told me that itunes 10.1 is released, 10.6.5. is released and were only waiting 4.2 for the iphone and ipad to make airplay work.

Now I see we need 4.2 for ATV2. When is this due for release ?

If it's not the same time as 4.2 for the iphone and ipad ( rumored this month ) when I'm pretty p****ed off.

All are due for release sometime this month.

4.2 is not released yet, so no reason why atv would work with airplay, 4.2 + atv update= all good
Wait a few days....

No But 4.2 GM has and i'm running it

No, it's not released. Apple already has released a b version of the GM and will likely have a c version to fix the iPad wifi issues. Apple can call the current developer release whatever it wants, but until they release it to the public it is not considered 'released.'

No, 4.2 is not released yet, you have downloaded and installed a firmware that is not officially available so you have to live with it.

When apple are ready to release 4.2 the atv wil get an update and the ecosytem will take the next great step, if you cannot wait then get a refund simples!!!!!

I know all about 4.2 and that, but wasn't away ATV2 would need a update.
The apple store never said this

iOS 4.2 has NOT been publicly released. Your whine STILL fails.

To put it simply, iPad 4.2 HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED. Most likely the Apple TV is going to be updated to 4.2 also when 4.2 iPad is released. Whether or not you knew that Apple TV requires an update is irrelevant because iPad 4.2 literally still isn't released. Now, when Apple finally does release iPad 4.2 and there is either no corresponding update for the Apple TV that enables video Airplay or magic elves that jump from the iPad 4.2 and let the Apple TV know it can now do video with its current 4.1 software then you might have a point, but until then you can't say the employee was wrong.

Ok point taken

I look forward to the updates on all devices

How does that saying go about assuming? You assumed and are pissed because you found out you're wrong. Being pissed and trying to blame others for you NOT listening will never change reality. IOS 4.2 has not been publically releases. When it is released for the iPad, iPhone, and Touch it will also release for atv which runs it too. Then airplay will work. So the employee is right.

Sorry for being cranky but a friend has been bugging me whining about the same issue for the last week, multiple times a day.

There has been zero mention from Apple about an Apple TV update this month. So don't count on it.

The new Apple TV so far it's been a failure.

You are correct that there hasn't been a mention from Apple about an Apple TV update, but they have advertised video airplay as a benefit of iOS4.2

If that didn't work by the end of November then people would have cause for complaint.

As for Apple TV being a failure, there's plenty of people who wouldn't agree with that. I've not noticed anything that was advertised that mine doesn't do, or that isn't promised with iOS4.2.

beerglass007: Did you ever consider that apple will push the required AppleTV 2 update at the same time or prior to the official release of iOS 4.2 to enable video airplay? Apple has "promised" only ONE thing: that iOS 4.2 with video airplay will release before the end of November 2010, that is weeks away. By your flawed logic should I have been mad that the iPad 4.2 Gold Master released Nov 1 wouldn't sync with my Mac (syncing is a promised feature after all) until Apple released iTunes 10.1 on November 12th?! The reason Apple hasn't released the final version of iOS 4.2 is because it needs to play nice with other pieces of an Apple puzzle that themselves haven't been released yet, like an ATV2 update. Count on the required updates arriving before the end of November and before iOS 4.2 is released.

Patience.
