assuming that you looked up the kind of ram your iMac takes and this is the right kind, yes. There's no problem. They say pairing identical ram sticks can increase performance, but I think the difference is pretty negligable.

Now the Apple representative at Best Buy told me I had to buy notebook memory, is this correct?

I know that the iMac uses laptop components in it (except for the HDD), but I would have thought it used desktop RAM? Or does it need notebook RAM due to it's laptop chipsets?
