UPDATE: Original title: "For God's Sake. Pre-Sign or you might be doomed." I may be so emotional on wasn't able to get the phone on launch day and had to wait for the whole weekend; but according to the comments below, pre-signing may have security concerns (depends on where you live), and if my package was delivered but stolen, I maybe even more doomed. Therefore, I changed the title to not strongly advise you to pre-sign but instead to let you decide by measuring its pros and cons.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Story time. I missed my iPhone 14 Pro Max delivery this noon because I wasn't able to meet the UPS delivery person. Later in the afternoon, I saw a note saying that they would try again on Monday. I REALLY wanted to get the package in my hand today, so I paid $7.99 to UPS in order to change my delivery address to a nearby UPS Customer Center so I could pick it up by myself. I called UPS and talked to a representative, and she was sure that the package would be delivered today, so I paid for the service. They said that they would call in 1 hour, but no one called. Until now, no one contacted me, and my package is still not ready to pick up. I called UPS again, and I was told that the package won't be ready to pick up today. Instead, I have to wait until Monday. I paid $7.99 because I wanted to get the package today. I asked if I could cancel that damn pick-up service, change the delivery address back to my place, and request a refund, but the representative said that he could not change it on his end. He can't do anything but keep saying "sorry." At least he tried something by asking for my contact information so he could urge the service end to process my package faster, but I don't know if it will help. So basically, I'm ****ed, and I have to wait for the whole weekend to receive my new phone.

If I pre-signed the package, the UPS delivery person could just leave the package in front of my place, just like all my Amazon packages, and this mess probably wouldn't happen. I should've learned my lesson from a similar situation from my 2016 MacBook Pro delivery. I also requested UPS to change the delivery so I could pick it up in person that night instead of waiting for another day, and it worked (I wasn't even asked to pay for the $7.99 fee like this time).

I had signature required and the phone was left on the stoop. We’re friends with the ups guy, but still we weren’t home.
Congrats. Well, I should've also checked about the signature requirement for my new place, which I just moved to a while ago, and it turns out that it's similar to what I lived six years ago. These years most of the time I've been living in student apartments that have a dedicated mail room, so I might not even need to sign. But I think the place I lived in last year also requires a signature, and I don't remember if I had the same issue with my 13 Pro Max delivery - I might've been waiting for the UPS truck to come. Also, it might depends on the products. I had my iPad Pro 9.7 delivered in front of my apartment the same place I mentioned for my 2016 MBP, and I don't remember I pre-signed for that.

I dunno the security implication of pre-sign your package, but I'd rather wait a weekend for the package to arrive than trying to rush. I assume as soon as the package is signed, UPS bears no responsibility afterwards. I could be wrong, but I would not pre-sign package for expensive purchase like this.

Being iPhone day, I would expect the driver to be working all day, even OT. Not sure how he would be able to drop it off at a depot in the middle of his shift. I suspect the phone rep had no idea today was a special day.

Since it was iPhone day, there was definitely a higher volume of shipments. Because I expected that my pick-up would be ready soon, I actually went to that UPS center in the afternoon even though it was not ready yet. Two other guys after me in the line also came for the iPhone.

Actually, good point. At least my package is safe. Also, I noticed that according to the pre-sign instruction from Apple's website, it seems that even though you signed, if the driver can't find a safe spot, they might not complete my delivery. But if they left the package because I pre-signed it, as you said, the package may have been stolen. I never worried about it when I was living in student apartments with mail room management, but since I'm renting a room in a house right now and all the packages are either being left naked in front of the door or in the mailbox (if it's small enough), so I actually need to be more careful.

I was a little shocked at the size of the box. They were bigger when they provided a charging block. Love my new 14 PM.

My iPhone was delivered by UPS and didn't need a signature. They just left it near our garage door.

Yep, it's way smaller. Next time (if I still live in my current place), I may pre-sign it and leave a post-it note to ask the driver to put the package in the mailbox (if it fits), considering the box is quite small. I know the risk of pre-sign it and losing the package, so this might be the best thing I can do.

I see. For my place, the only two locations for leaving the package are the front door and the mailbox. I guess it might depend on the property or just up to the UPS driver.

100% reasonable by apple. Its like the legalize on the back of a ticket you take when you park somewhere. It will absolve them of responsibility should the phone get stolen.

You may leave the pre auth form out at 6 AM and t
UPS may only deliver at 3PM. But by then someone could have cased the area and will grab it as soon as ups leaves it where you told them to.

And honestly if I was a delivery driver especially on a day like this or any launch day (for phones or consoles). I wouldnt leave it even if recipient did “pre release.

I suppose it depends if your area has porch pirates.
While I think in my area it won't happen a lot, I still may be a bit more careful. Three weeks ago (at my current place), my roommate's Amazon package said delivered, but he didn't find anything. Maybe delivered to the wrong address, maybe stolen, we don't know. This did remind me - I just moved here three weeks ago, and I'll use the Neighborhood app to see how safe my area is.

Makes sense. Btw, here are the full instructions and terms & conditions from Apple:
