I got an iPad the week after it was launched. Although it is great for what it does, there is a lot, I say again a lot, that it can't do. In stark contrast, even the current version of the MBA is a real computer, with a real keyboard, and the ability to run software beyond that which Apple deigns to make available in the iTunes app store. Don't even think about an iPad unless you plan to limit your use of it to light Web browsing and watching or listening to recorded media.

I find the iPad completely WORTHLESS... the iPhone/iPod Touch does the same stuff only much more portable, BECAUSE THEY FIT IN THE POCKET!

The MBA is a REAL computer, a Mac nonetheless, that does EVERYTHING I can throw at it. It's not a server, but it has a fast CPU, and plenty of resources to do everything a computer needs to do.

People are talking about touchscreen MBA's, flat panel LCDs replacing the keyboard, and etc... but none of those things lead to PRODUCTIVITY. If I want a lackluster product that's not good at anything, I will buy some Windows 7 tablet/w keyboard. I want the MBA to continue to have full-sized display, keyboard, and yet ultraportability to excel on the road or on the desk while attached to a 27" LED ACD.

That is just the thing... people are stuck with the thought, "need more power for heavy lifting." It is all BS for the vast majority of people. The vast majority would benefit far greater by having an MBA that's shear perfection. Then, buy a 27" LED ACD for "heavy lifting" while plugged into an MBA. We DON'T NEED more power people.

What we need is better software to take full advantage of the power we have. The MBA v 2,1 has gotten faster and faster with nearly every OS X service update. OpenCL, OpenGL, drivers, and even the SSD are all FASTER. The average person would benefit far greater from an SSD as found in the MBA rather than a Core i7 Quad CPU (I know they don't have them for the MBA, I am just making a point of wanting "more power").

I would tell the vast majority to forget the thought of the MBA not being able to do "heavy lifting." For the vast majority, the MBA will be faster than an MBP with 3 GHz Core CPU, 8 GB RAM, and a 7200rpm HDD. The SSD alone in the MBA removes the number one constraint felt by the average computer user.

In addition, a one computer system is SO MUCH easier to deal with. I have finally not lost files, while using the MBA for a year plus as my only computer. A one computer system that will do everything, and the MBA will for the vast majority, is a much simpler system.

Now, the MBA does have a few limitations, but I believe there are ways around those. We all want more RAM, but the MBA actually has enough for either OS X or Windows 7. The problem occurs when we want to run both simultaneously... okay, so for now we have to run them one at a time. The other problem for many is drive space. With the various applications available for sharing drive space, MobileMe access to AEBS attached drive, and wireless networking, this is basically a dead issue.

The other limitations of the MBA aren't really limitations at all. With the Nvidia GPU and 24" LED ACD, the MBA can give us full desktop space we would expect from a "workhorse" machine. The battery life on the MBA is fine, and if it's not then people NEED an MBP or MB and not an MBA. The MBA cannot sustain a 3 lb. weight limit and achieve 10-hour battery performance WITHOUT giving up lots of performance capabilities and probably dropping to ULV and Intel's God forsaken IGP. I love the fact that the MBA has a four-hour battery, as it means I don't have to carry around another pound for battery life. The MB/MBPs are a joke with their irrelevant and completely outdated optical drives... if it doesn't include Blu Ray it's simply pointless and a waste of space and carry weight.

I LOVE THE MBA. I want a few changes and additions to the new MBA, but I still believe it's the most amazing Mac ever. I also think it could dominate the ultraportable market just as it did when the 2,1 was introduced in October 2008 with a few updates...

Core i7-6x0LM low voltage CPU (25W TDP, IGP turned off)
ATI 8430 GPU (7W TDP)
4 GB RAM standard (upgradeable to 8 GB for $400)
256 GB SSD standard or as $300 BTO option (I expect the high-end MBA price to be bumped $300 if this is standard)
13 to 15" IPS display
5-hour battery
Glass Trackpad
Redesigned case... eliminating the majority of the wasted bezel to either make the 13" MBA smaller or keep similar size but use a larger display.

Also would be nice is a 3G/4G Verizon card. I think this is about a 50/50 shot.

I really believe this MBA would dominate the market again as the v 2,1 did when it was released clear back in 2008. I want Apple to jack the price up. I expect an extra $100 added for the ATI discrete GPU. Apple could add more things and jack the price back up if it wants to. I really hope it does. I want more power in the same weight rather than reducing weight or reducing performance to get longer battery life.

I haven't used my MBA since I got my Lenovo, but since I am working on a big project right now I am not missing it too much, BUT... Actually, I love the keyboard on this Lenovo ThinkPad. It is actually nicer than the MBA's keyboard in my opinion. I believe my typing speed has increased by five words per minute and my error rate has dropped by 50%... and it's shocking to me, because I always loved the MBA's keyboard too. However, I do miss the idea of using an MBA that dominates all other ultraportables... I miss an MBA that is everything I want in a computer and more. I miss the fun... so I want Apple to give us an MBA that is, in relation to alternatives, what the 2,1 was when it was released.

Here's to the MBA and an update in September along with the iPod, iTV, and 7" iPad updates.

If Apple offers an updated MBA that incorporates all, or even most, of the foregoing improvements, I'll be first in line at the Apple Store to buy one. It would be expensive but it would be good. Whenever I think that Apple's current prices might be too high, though, I remember that in 2003 I paid $3,169.00 for my first Mac, a 17 inch Powerbook G4.

yes scottsdale i agree with you, i really had no problems with the macbook air (i had the runcore in it) the only reason i sold it was in anticipation of the new one coming out. I usually always do this, (get much more money and am usually able to buy the new one by just throwing in 100 dollars or so.) anyways i totally agree with you the macbook air is a great machine and i dont think we need faster cpus, what we need is a better way of cooling the mba and the software needs to be improved as you said it has been.i would be ok with a 1.6 processor with more ram (4gb) ssd (fast as intel or runcore) and a great cooling system. Oh yea and a REAL 5 HOUR BATTERY, like while running youtube or anything. not a 2.5 hour battery.

HOw much did you sell your MBA for? I have the current model 2.13GHZ/128SSD looking to get $1350 it's in EXCELLENT condition.. I think that is reasonable? Going to pick up a MBP need the extra power and battery life can't hurt.

i sold mine for 950 on ebay, it was the first gen 1.6 runcore ssd (32gb). does urs have any warranty left on it? and the thing with ebay is that you get lucky sometimes and sometimes you dont, i seen 2.13 ssd models (mint condition) go for 900 and also seen them go for 1450 so i mean i guess you just gotta post it and see.

I would allow a "best offer" auction to take place where you ask a buy it now price of what you want, and allow people to offer you less. I think $1350 is okay, but you will be paying eBay over $100 to sell it too.

I would look into Craig's List. I sold one there for $1400 just a few weeks ago. It was in perfect condition but a year old.

I put it on CL for $1350. I'm not wiling to dump it for any less it's well worth it and it excellent condition. Still a bargain considering it retails for over $1900.. If I can't get a decent price then I'll just keep it. Still under warranty until mid-October 2010. I'll try eBay for a bit more to negate the "fees".

FWIW, I do like the MBA but I'm just so tired of it getting laggy/hot so quickly after I start using it. Most of the time I only use it for a few minutes so it's never an issue but when I do need to work for a while I have to take a break just to let this thing cool down. :(

I know how you feel. I can't go back to a regular Mac after using a Macbook Air. I am sure Apple will update it next month. A iMac / Macbook Air combo is the way to go if you need the iMac.

Your comment reminds me of something that happened yesterday. I was in the Apple Store waiting for a Genius Bar appointment to troubleshoot a problem I was having with my iPad. While I was waiting, I used an MBA for a few minutes. In the interests of science I picked it up with one hand with the lid raised and was reminded, again, of how light and easy to manipulate it is. Then, I tried to pick up a 13 inch MBP with one hand. I could do it but the increased weight of the MBP convinced me that I wouldn't want to lift it with one hand with the lid opened if I could help it.

I felt that way when I GOT my MBA !!!

I have a 12" Powerbook I no longer use. I bought my MBA the same day I got my iPhone 3Gs. No kidding, my MBA stayed in the box, unopened, for a week!!

When I finally started using it, I felt like I was cheating on my PB!! Now it lies dormant in a drawer. I did miss it for a while, but I've grown accustomed to the MBA.

I hope they come out with an update soon. I'll sell this one, but not before having the new one in hand of course. Should fetch some decent $$ as there is nary a scratch on it.

As much as I loved my Air the short time I owned one. I have an iPad which works well for my usual travel needs then I have the PowerBook G4 12" if I really need to do something more.

However, if I didn't have the PowerBook, iPad, or a Mac Mini (Mini will be in my hands shortly) I would love a iMac-MacBook Air setup. However, mine is still very good, and the 12" PowerBook is still Apple's best ultra-portable.

I'd love to have a MacBook air. It would perfectly compliment my computers in my sig. (Note the MacBook pro is going to a friend, hence perfect excuse for an air!)

I am a super heavy computer user. One is not enough. If something happened to one computer I'd have another until I got back on my feet.

Just sold my MBA for $1375. I can't exactly wait around for a refresh at this point and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my new 13" MBP. At this point I don't have a whole lot of faith in the Air. Even with 4GB ram and a slightly more powerful processor, I still believe it won't be sufficient enough or that much better than the current model.

Dunno what it is, I had a hard time parting with my old Apple laptops as well. Most of them were love at first sight. But you did the right thing, maybe just too soon :), but cash-wise it's the right time.

You'll be OK when Apple releases the next MBA or similar laptop. iPad is just not the same.
