I recently got a new phone(11 Pro Max) on Oct 8th, before I switched over and activated the new phone I made sure my other phone(XS Max) was backed up to iCloud which at the time it showed the last backup was on 10/7 at 4:00 am.

I tried to activate my new phone but I had some issues due two factor authentication and no longer having the same phone number, so long story short I contacted Apple to activate my new phone but ultimately had to go through the account recovery process to gain access to my iCloud account which took 2 weeks.

Fast forward to yesterday where I was able to log back into my iCloud and everything was missing i.e. apps, photos, documents, settings, music and etc, I even did an erase all and backed up from a backup but there was no backup to backup from on my iCloud.

I contacted Apple tech support and spoke to a tech but she couldn’t find any backups so it’s now been escalated and I am waiting for a call back from Apple tech support as I write this post. I am not sure if they will be able to recover my old backup(s)but I am hoping so because that’s 14 years of information, apps and music down the drain if not.

Has this happened to anyone before? If so what was the outcome?

In a van down by the river
I have read of a few instances similar problems on here over the years. Some where able to get their data back. I hope Apple is able to help you.

I strongly suggest you log into your account on appleid.com and add 1 or 2 more trusted phone numbers to your account. They don't have to be iPhones. They can also be landlines. That way, if you had to change your number or didn't have access to your iPhone, you could still have access to your account, and hopefully, not go through what you are going through now.

It is also a good idea to use an app like iMazing to make an encrypted local backup of your phone and iPad. It is much quicker than iCloud and backs-up things iCloud doesn't.

Thank you for responding to my post. I already added some other numbers but thank you for the tip. Yes, I have learned my lesson to not solely depend on iCloud from here on out.
