Missing contacts and groups

So, I've been one of the few MobileMe people who was happy with it. I synced my contacts on my iPhone via MobileMe and they always updated instantly online and on the iPad or any combination. I just transitioned from MobileMe to iCloud along with the ios5 update. When I go to contacts, they, along with the groups, are all gone and they don't show up online. I haven't updated my iPad yet and am scared to lose that. This has been the worst/slowest/unreliable iOS upgrade yet.

I am in the Syncing apps to my iphone stage. Hope contacts gets fixed after this. If not, would a restore fix my contacts? I fear they are permanently lost on MobileMe/iCloud.
