Resolved Missing iTunes artwork... that's not missing?

Lots of missing artwork threads, but I haven't found this one yet:

I have a mix of purchased & ripped CDs as well as Apple Music purchased albums on my iMac. They all have the artwork and other associated info. What I can't figure out is this - when I copy the Apple Music songs to a flash drive, it brings all the artwork with it. But when I copy the ripped CD songs, no artwork comes with. That artwork still shows up in the iTunes display though.

I'm scratching my head here. Any ideas?

Compared two info windows below - the one on the left was bought through Apple Music, the one on the right was ripped from my CD.

Apple made some changes in how they handle artwork between iTunes 9 and 10. You may be running up against this if your library is old. As you've noticed, fixing things by hand can be a PITA.

Thanks, I'll check out the link. But FYI, I have had no issue with new or old (both of these items were added recently) but with "ripped from CD" vs. "purchased from Apple." The one on the left was purchased from Apple and the one on the right was ripped from my CD. It's not that big of a deal, but when I first noticed it when I put music on a flash drive to use in the car. The screen shows the album cover in the case of the Apple-purchased music, but some other picture of the band (which I've only ever seen in the car, btw ) and of course if I play the music through any device other than my Mac.

And Oi! Those bagpipes are hatchet! That version of Amazing Grace is the one they'll be playing at my funeral. It's going in the will.

With no ideas from the MR crowd or anywhere else that Google showed me, I tinkered a bit and finally came up with a "solution" to the missing artwork... that's not missing. Of course it doesn't make any sense, which is fitting considering this is iTunes. The only reason I looked into it at all is so that the proper album artwork would show on the car stereo when I load up music on a flash drive. Not a critical issue by any means, but that doesn't mean it still didn't bug me a bit.

So here's the issue, and solution, explained a bit better. I'll use the two songs from the first post:

The first song was purchased via iTunes. I dragged and dropped that mp3 to the desktop, and it brought the artwork with it, and then on to wherever else I take that file, e.g. the car stereo. Next I ripped a CD to iTunes, which managed to find the album artwork however it normally does, through iTunes music or whatever. But when I drag a song to the desktop, you can see that the artwork does not come with it.

But if I right click and choose Get Info on any of the songs from the ripped CD, then click the artwork tab... the album cover artwork is there somehow.

Next, I click and drag the artwork from this screen right to the desktop.

Then click the "Add artwork" button and choose the artwork from the desktop.

Then click ok and delete the artwork-free mp3 to the trash. Next time I pull the same song out of iTunes to the desktop, it comes with the artwork.

Obviously, the faster route is to select all songs at once and then Get Info / Add Artwork, at which point it becomes a 15 second "repair" for the whole album. I doubt I will go back and do this for all of the CDs that I've ripped to iTunes, but I might for any music I put on a flash drive for the car, or at least for any CDs I rip going forward.
