Had a lot of trouble, especially getting VMware tools in to have full screen, but got Catalina on a VMware 16.1.2 install on windows 10. Got all my apps installed and registered. Then, VMware offered to update, I let it - mistake - broke everything. Re-installed 16.1.2, but when it comes to the VMware network - how do you connect? - the wifi option is greyed out, so I end up with ethernet LAN installed, and have no way after in the settings to add any network adapter other than another ethernet LAN. What am I doing wrong? How can I get my VMware installation to give me the wifi option? Thanks - Mark

VMWare can’t use the wifi directly. You beed to bridge a real adaptor to the virtual switch in Fusion. There are settings for this.

I'm using VMware Player not fusion, and the first successful installation did not require any special action for internet access. And I have dropped back to that same version, but now have all these problems and cannot access internet. I do not understand.

Wait, you are emulating Mac OS on a windows system with VMWare player?
That’s the opposite of what I had gathered. Either way, networking is configured in VMWare. Your vm will have settings within Player for the network. The guest MacOS will think it has an Ethernet connection, this is normal. Configure the virtual network device to “bridged” and that’s all you should need. The vm Mac should get an address from your dhcp server.

Thanks for your assistance, barbu. I do not really understand - the first successful installation of VMware player and macOS did not require me to do anything with the network settings.

I went into virtual machine settings, network adapter - it was set to NAT. I changed it to bridged - was told: you are not connected to the internet. Went back to network adapter and looked at configure adapters. One of 7 was checked - microsoft wi-fi #2. Checked two more that I thought might be applicable. Now it tells me: safari can't find the server. Returned to configure adapters, checked them all. Repeats: safari can't find the server. Tried a couple URL's that I know are good.

I'm attaching a screen capture of the settings so you can see how the adapters are listed.

helpful screenshots. So on your windows machine, you are connecting via wifi right?
So in the adapter settings shown, you *only* want to select the adapter that your windows machine uses to connect. So I think in this case, that would be the “killer” one. Deselect all other adapters and save.

Well, my main connection on my windows laptop is actually a wired LAN connection through a USB 3 adapter. But I of course have wi-fi too, and yes that connects with the killer adapter. After I checked all 7, I actually had both the wired LAN and wifi connected.

So you’ll want to select the wired connection, and only the wired connection. It should just work once this is set correctly.

I unchecked all LAN interfaces, except the #5, which is the hard wired LAN connection through a USB port:
Realtek USB GbE Family Controller #5 (USB 10/100/1000 LAN)

But, even though system preferences/ network within Catalina shows all normal, I still cannot access the internet.

Here is where it gets bizarre. I used finder/go/connect to server to connect successfully to my NAS, and can see all the folders on it.

So, I downloaded the dmg for brave browser and put it on the NAS, then installed it from there. Still cannot access the internet. I get this message:

This site can't be reached. DNS address could not be found. And this is for common sites like www.google.com.

I'm wondering if my router could be somehow restricting internet access to the VMware player's IP address, but am not sure how to check it. What amazes me is that I did not have to monkey with any of these settings the first go around.

What are the Mac’s network settings? What is the DNS server it’s trying to use? Can you ping it from the Mac?

OK, problem resolved. Went to sys pref/network/advanced/TCP/IP, changed configure IPv4 from "manually" to "using DHCP", then clicked "renew DHCP lease" - GOT INTERNET!!!

thanks!!!
