MIT $100 laptop

That's not so bad, it's definately better than origami :eek: . So what's it running, some Linux distro?

**edit: nevermind, there's a pic that shows it's running Fedora, nice!
 
Runs Fedora Linux. AMD 400 Mhz with 128 MB.

I thought the ears where port protectors but I'm not sure, this thing is supposed to use wind up power.

The original design specs call for wi-fi and cellphone connectivity. Perhaps it's an antenna?

Also it a 500Mhz..so the homepage says "ck and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory"
 
Just because the people who'll get this computer are poor, doesn't mean they don't have eyes. It's fugly. :eek:

EDIT TO ADD: And I've said it before, but sign me up for a hand crank. I'd rather have a hand crank and have to use it for 10 seconds every 1-2 hours rather than have a 3 hour battery life.

My teacher told us about this computer and he said something hand-crank power too.
 
I wonder exactly how much this prototype cost to build. ;)

And the hand-crank idea, while good for areas that have no electricity, DOES require that the owner expend a fair number of calories... not so good in areas where people are already malnourished.

Not to start a flame fest but when Steve offered OS X was he going to have Apple programers scale OS X to the target hardware? Personally, I think he was going for some positive PR.

Lol... IOW, perfect for American schools.

Perhaps more of our electronics should be manually-powered....
 
I believe they got rid of the hand crank in the last round of modifications -- too hard to make it strong enough. I think the plan now is to offer some sort of detachable foot pedal. I'm not sure if they're going to have them with every computer, or if that will be "optional." I like the idea that anyone can buy one for $300 and then the remaining $200 will be used to donate two to the children.
 
but glossy screen, it'll be so hard to see under the sun :p I kind of like the orange keyboard, it's a cute colour
 
I agree, I think they're pretty cute in a novelty sort of way. I hope they're sucessful.

In the pictures, i thought they looked like swing-up covers for the ports. So, when you want to use a port, flip the cover up!

But it could be wireless.
 
It looks more like it could be a Fisher Price laptop because of the funky color scheme and thick borders.
