Mixing MMS and iMessage - why does it suck so much?

Everyone in my family has iPhones except for my brother on Android. Every damn time someone starts a group message with 5 iPhones and the 1 android, I miss the vast majority of the messages. My siblings (on iOS) will get them, but they seem to skip right over my phone. I can see replies that come back, but the original message NEVER gets to me. This became *especially* frustrating this week as we had a death in the family and the only messages I saw were the replies to the death notification text. WTF. This has been a problem for years, not just isolated to iOS 14.

Why does this suck so much? Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this aside from just forcing my brother to get an iPhone? I can't get anyone to use another messaging app like WhatsApp or similar.

Do you have MMS Messaging enabled in Settings?

I've never had issues like that. The main issue I have is not being able to leave the conversation when an Android device is part of the group message..

It does suck. My issue is the conversation continuously gets split.
