iPod .MKV file to video ipod

is there any way to convert a .MKV video file so i can watch it on my Ipod Video?

I'm using Win xp

Bump! I've been seeing more of these lately.

Is there a way to do this well on mac? QT and iTunes don't recognize the files, but I can play them in other apps.

iSquint converts them but does a terrible job, the end result is stuttery throughout.

Anyone find a good way to convert these?

hmm.. never heard of the file-type before. You could just play the vid and use one of those screen-capture programs..

MKV files are like 2 files in one, a subtitle vobsub file and the movie file, sometimes it even has fonts embedded in it. So no I dont think theres a good way to convert them because of how its more like a zip file than a movie file. And even if you could youd most likely lose the subtitles.

i second the last post. i had one or two of these in the past and while they played fine in vlc, there really wasn't much else that could be done with them.

another package format that will slip into obscurity. hopefully.

however. you could by all means attempt (and i dont know what with) to extract the video and audio files, and hope to find the subtitles elsewhere, if you need them, and recombine them in a format of you liking. sounds like a lot of work for one video though.

another thing to consider: if the file is already less than, say, 1GB and you plan to convert it to some other format...it probably wont look pretty.

Haven't actually tried this, but should work.

First, get mkvtoolnix

Then, get MKVextractGUI and extract into the same folder you installed mkvtoolnix

And then, run mkvextractgui from that folder.

You should then (I hope) be able to extract the video and audio (and other resources, if any) from the MKV file.

I have no idea what program you could use to merge them to an iPod compatible file though. Been ages seen I messed with that

I think mpeg streamclip or handbrake could convert .mkv to m4v. I haven't tried it though.

iSquint will convert them just fine.

In fact, it converts just about everything.

First of all, Handbrake works just fine on .mkv files. There's no need to use iSquint (which is no longer being actively developed).

I use Allok Video to Ipod if im encoding a mkv to ipod. If the mkv has subtitles i can add these in allok you just have to extract the subs from the original mkv via mkvextract
