Mkv reference file

I have Blu ray mkv files I don't want to spend time re-encoding to get them into iTunes so I want to make reference files for these and put them into iTunes while my mkv files are on an external drive. I tried making a reference file but it wouldn't import into iTunes. These mkv files are encoded in mpeg or VC-1 so is this a problem or what am I doing wrong?

Maybe I'm missing something but I thought iTunes is only going to allow iTunes compatible files so unless they are .mp4, .m4v, or .mov, they won't import into iTunes. If iTunes can't play .mkv files, why do you want them imported into iTunes?

The entire point of this thread is a question about making a reference file so it will import into iTunes, I'm not trying to import mkv, I know that doesn't work. Right now I use MakeMKV to rip and then I use iVI to repackage the h.264 encoded mkv files, but that leaves many mkv files encoded in mpeg or VC-1 that will not.

So all h.264 mkv files are easily converted to m4v, but the others would have to be re-encoded which takes far too much time and at risk of quality loss which I don't want to happen.

Basically I just want to know if it's possible to repackage these mpeg and vc1 encoded mkvs to .mov so QuickTime with perian can play them, and then create reference files to add them to iTunes. So far the reference files I've tried would not import to iTunes..

I don't have an apple tv I simply want every movie organized in iTunes

Unfortunately the short answer is no. What you are trying to do will not work due to the fact that the codec is not compatible. As you said, the containers are using mpeg and vc1. These alone are not compatible with iTunes even if you do put them in a .mov container. The only solution is to sit through and reencode them to a compatible format or switch to a player that can play them.

Why don't you do MP4 containers instead of MKV? That should remove your problem, and give you better capabilities on Apple devices.

The whole problem is that MP4 containers can't hold MPEG2 or VC1 video. So it's either recode the video (which takes time and loses some quality) or use different software for organisation and playback (I like Plex).
