MKV to WMV

I have a lot of MKV files. Sadly not all my devices can play these. I read that if you just rename the MKV to WMV they will be able to read it. That's exactly what worked! I didn't notice any problems or quality degradation, but does anyone know if that is the case? or does it make no difference? I'd like to know this before I change my whole MKV collection to WMV :) Thanks.
