I am currently in the process of ripping my DVD collection to begin a Plex setup. I plan to get an ATV 3 and install Plex on it (hopefully it's Jailbroken quickly!) I want to make sure I am going about this in the best way and getting optimal formats.

Right now, I am ripping and compressing with Ripit. This is giving me a 5-7GB .dvdmedia and a 1-1.5GB .m4v file. I am importing the m4v's to Plex and just storing the .dvdmedia files.

Would I be better off just getting a single MKV for each movie? Unfortunately these are coming from DVDs so Im not going to do any better than 480p.

Would I see decreased Plex streaming performance with an MKV over an m4v ?

Guidance would be appreciated. TIA.
