Hey everyone,

Just wondering if they're already pushing ML unto store-bought Macs, or how long it should take. I want to order a BTO MBA, but want it to come with ML already installed.

Have any of you already received a Mac with it preinstalled?

Cheers

There is no disadvantage in buying a Mac in a store with Lion installed and upgrading it free. If you order a BTO today, it will come with ML installed.

You don't need fiber. Any broadband internet connection will work just fine.

Unless you've got a fair bit of bandwidth other Internet activities will get choked whilst the download completes (very slowly) in the background.

Many Internet connections also have transfer limits, which could result in fines or speed throttling if the user goes over them. My Internet connection was limited to 10gb/month until very recently. It's now 40gb/month and I'm still waiting until next month to download ML because I can't afford the download capacity right now. This is a disadvantage of having to download ML. Boom.

Be less hasty with blanket statements!

A BTO ordered today will likely not have ML. They image drives in batches and then grab those drives during assembly. Even SSDs. They most definitely have a stock of Lion imaged drives and it could take 7-14 days before BTOs are built with ML imaged drives.

Case and point, last year I ordered a BTO 27" iMac with SSD + HDD. I waited until the first week of August after reports that a couple MR posters had rec'd Lion imaged machines before ordering. In fact I called 4-5 days after the Lion release and order reps confirmed that machines were still shipping with SL, even BTOs.

If you have a sub-standard internet connection, you can go to a coffee shop or Apple store or many other places with WiFi and download it easily. There is no disadvantage in upgrading from Lion to ML. Your disadvantage is your internet provider and plan.

I knew you'd argue the toss right down to the last technicality in phrasing rather than just admitting I have a point. :p
I liked you better when you were just a copy/paste script!

yup, when we bought our first iMac way back in mid 2007, it came with Tiger preinstalled rather than Leopard. We had to install Leopard ourselves from the included disk.

Hmm, I'm sorry if the first thing I want to do when I get a new computer isn't waiting a couple of hours for a download to finish and then half an hour more for the actual installation, besides not getting updated versions of the documentation and such. Besides, with all the confusion regarding the redemption codes, and such, Apple doesn't seem to be pulling this process off in quite the best manner.

That first week of August would correlate to around which date this year?

Last year Lion released July 20th? I think that was the date.
I ordered Aug 8.
Shipped Aug 11.
Arrived Aug 16.

But I sent the order to a friend at Apple on Aug 7 who got me an employee discount.
