ML size on disk.

I have just performed a clean install of Mountain Lion and I think I'm having a problem.

I was under the impression it only needs 8GB of disk space (Apple even lists 8GB under minimum requirements on their site), however, it seems it is taking up nearly 16GB.

Naturally, I thought something went wrong and for some reason it was installed twice, so I formatted my macbook and installed again. But it is still taking up the same amount of space again...

Would anyone know why this is happening? Or am I wrong and Mountain Lion really needs 16GB?

Anyone? I still haven't figured out what exactly is the problem...

To provide more details:

I have created a USB drive using both the DIY method, and also the Lion DiskInstaller application and tried installing from both of them.

What I did is, booted from the USB drive, ran Disk Utility to erase my hard disk, then quit Disk Utility and ran the installer. The OS installs fine, and everything works, the only problem is that it takes more space than it should - approximately twice as much.

Btw, doubt it matters, but I have a 15'' mid-2010 Macbook Pro.

after i did a clean install, my storage was also showing around 16gb used space. I just figured this was normal. If its not, please keep me updated in this thread if you find your answer elsewhere.

Yep...The expended installation occupies roughly 14-16GB depending on your HDD and spec. It's normal.

Oh, I see... I did consider it might be normal, but Apple only lists 8GB of space under requirements for ML (as seen here).

Did Lion take up as much space too? If it did I never noticed...although granted, I had installed it on top of SL, so wasn't paying as much attention to disk space.

Lion was significantly smaller...You could make a USB DMG image with a 1 GB stick...ML requires a 4GB stick for it's image file.

Lion is about the same size at around 4 GB, if you're talking about an actual install file. You must be thinking of creating a bootable USB disk with just the recovery partition, which is just under 1 GB. This isn't a full install though and will connect to Apple to download the rest of Lion.

They both take up about the same amount of space when you do a clean install. The exact amount depends on various things, such as what Mac you have and how much memory you have. A sleep image file is created automatically that is the same size as your RAM. If you're using TM to backup, then local backups will be saved on your internal storage and then when the TM backup runs, those files will be erased and so forth. There are lots of different parameters and things going on. If you've done an upgrade, then you might also have old log files and so forth taking up space.

So since I have 8GB of RAM I'm assuming it's fine, as 8GB (for the actual installation) + 8GB (for the sleep image file you mentioned) = 16, which is the approximate space the whole thing takes up on my machine.
