It sucks that D&D, and now LotR are both free to play MMO's but only for Windows. Then AVA and Huxley (whenever it finally gets released) are also good games that are free. It'd be nice to see those guys in OS X

WOW is my Fav and probably everyone elses. A modern MMO with guns would be city of heroes/villains
I dont like restarting because I like my mail, my echofon, my itunes open while playing and VM is bad unless it's a mac pro or top of line iMac

You can try EverQuest: Mac Edition. It has a very very very good community and the population of the game has actually been steadily increasing because people want the classic experience back.
I played EverQuest on the PC from 1999 to 2005. I quit because the expansions that were coming out were ridiculously terrible.
EverQuest: Mac hasn't had a new expansion since 2003, so it is frozen from when EverQuest was in it's prime. The best thing about EverQuest Mac is the community. It has by far the best community in any MMO I have ever played. The content that EverQuest: Mac has isn't going to get any bigger, but that's okay, because most people that have played EverQuest: Mac since the beginning in 2004 still haven't touched all the content.
When I quit, there was only an average of 200 people online active at anytime. Now there are about 300-400 people online active at anytime. It doesn't seem like a lot, but it actually isn't that bad, it is perfectly playable. People will help you learn the ropes of the game.
Another thing that you might consider is that it is cheap. All the software and expansions is free, plus it's free for the first 30 days and a credit card isn't needed. After that it is just 12 dollars a month I believe.
Some people enjoy EverQuest, some don't. I think it used to be a very good game back from 1999-2004 but it lost it's magic when the Sony team started pumping out incomplete expansions every 4 months.
If anything, just try the 30-day trial and register on the forums on EQMac.com and tell them that you are new to EQ, they will gladly teach you some basics.
If you have 10.6 though, you must have Rosetta installed from the Mac discs that came with your computer or the Mac OS X disc.

Oh crap, LotR is now free too??? So sad to see another MMO march toward the grave in the wake of the WoW giant.
