is this new news or have I been under a rock...

"The iPhone is a communications mixed bag, with support for IMAP, POP3 and Yahoo Push e-mail. It will automatically recognize phone numbers in e-mail messages and provide one-click access to dialing them. However, it will not support Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), so users won't be able to send text messages with pictures or video to other cell phone users."

def under a rock, nearly every phone today has MMS support, i dont see why apple wont include it it wouild be stupid not to

Well Id guess the majority of people do not even know what MMS is - yet alone actually use it. I have it an have never used it. Every one in my family (8 kids) have it and did not know what it was when I asked them if they use it - including their teen age children...
 
That fact alone turned me away from the iPhone.. :(

Why use MMS when you can use email, plus tons and tons of phones cant display the size and quality of the 2 MP camera pics the iphone will take (for example, my SLVR L7 wouldn't be able to display it, that thing is a piece o crap)

well if you dont have a pc with you then it kinda sucks or not near a wifi spot or you dont have the internet set up on the phone then it is handy. it does resize the image when sending or it will be to big wont it?...

Must be American children. I am an American myself, but can't understand why people back in the US in general can't seem to grog on SMS.

Obviously don't live in Europe, my grandparents (80+) have sent me picture messages. Picture messages are rife over here.

As previously stated they have a number of advantages over email on a phone.

For a starter with all new phones the settings are automatically set up.

People, in general, do not realise that phones can do email and if they do currently they are reasonably complicated to set up and difficult to browse.

Currently contract deals give users cheap picture messages where as the data plans are usually pretty expensive.

MMS is huge here in Europe, and everyone knows what it is and everyone uses it. I think its funny how the US think they lead in US cell phone technology. The SIM cards were used several years here before they were even introduced in the States. I wonder how much further ahead Asia is than Europe?

And e-mail? What are you going to do, upload a video to your phone, send it via e-mail and then download it off your phone onto a computer to watch it? MMS plays every media format out there right on the phone. I'm sure iPhone is gonna have problems trying to do that.

and the cell phone companies are more than happy to plod along at a technological snail's pace to catch up. keeps the overhead low.

Europe is only a year or so ahead of the US in terms of GSM 3G service. Asia is where it all starts. More specifically, South Korea and Japan. They have the advantage of having very small land mass to cover, so they can roll out new technology quickly.

As for really being "behind" in terms of hardware... Europe is getting its phones from America (Moto / Palm), Taiwan (HTC), and South Korea (Samsung). There is no real innovation in Europe in terms of hardware or technology. You just have less land mass to cover, and so you can roll-out 3G faster per area.

So technically, yes, the US does lead Europe in cell technology, considering it's developed here and then adopted in Europe. Your carriers are just faster at rolling out the technology than our carriers.

Technically the cell phone market leader is called Nokia. And, by far.
Unless US has recently invaded Finland, i find it quite curious to say that there is no cell phone innovation in Europe.

Dont know, maybe you find the Nokia phones a bit too complicated to use, with all that MMS stuff, video, etc.

No-MMS in Europe would be like a car without airbag (and the "go with email" answer is a bit like answering "you dont need airbag, just go slow").

I think that this is up there with 'gay' as one of those playground insults that should not be used on these forums.

Lack of MMS really doesn't bother a lot of people. I for one have used that feature on my phone but only once or twice and could certainly cope without it. I think that the ability to email pictures would be of far greater use and allows bulk messaging for the cost of 1 upload vs the cost of multiple uploads on MMS (if that makes sense). Presently I carry a phone and an iPod and this device would effectively be an upgrade to both with no effective loss of functionality to me. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It's called choice.

Whining about it might be you exercising your right to free speech but then allow me to exercise mine when I tell you to shut up cos I'm getting bored of hearing it (aimed at no-one in particular)

Nokia and innovation don't go hand-in-hand in my opinion.
I guess Symbian fans would disagree.

And we have plenty of phones with MMS, video, etc. So try not to be condescending. And in that same vein, use proper comparisons. MMS vs. Email is in no way similar to using preventative measures vs. secondary safety measures.

Using such a ridiculous comparison only proves that maybe us stupid Americans aren't the dumbest out there ;)

Er...okkk. "...i for one....". I for one doesnt translate to alot of people, so next time speak for yourself and stop trying to tell people what will/won't bother them.

MMS is a common and useful feature and if people could 'cope without it' i wonder why 99% of mobile manufacturers still incorporate it into their handsets.

I wasn't insulting anyone but Apple, the OP asked a question and i answered it and gave my opinion. MMS is a no brainer feature and not including it IMHO is retarded, especially for a phone that aims to go worldwide.

Oh btw, if you have something to say, just say it instead of hiding it in invincible fonts

Hu-oh...you're right. MMS and Email are not meant to have the same function. That's exactly why i find it ridicolous to say "guys, who needs MMS when there's email". Sure, and why use a plane when you can travel by car?

In Europe MMS are simply considered a given...just as SMS or having a voicemail.

This said, this phone is going out in the US, and:
1) In US from what i understand you dont care so much about MMS, so no big deal for you, nor for Apple.
2) I just hope that there are no structural in the phone itself the prevent it from using MMS (anyone has a clue?)
3) I am TERRIBLY envy that you dumb americans get this phone way before us...cm-on, AT LEAST in phones we are waaaaaay ahead!!!


Obviously i would buy it day one, MMS or non MMS.
Heck, i would probably buy it even if it didnt call...

Might have something to do with how the files are stored on the iPhone etc. but who knows besides the Apple employees?
 
I was obviously ironic, and that "dumb" was obviously referred to your previous post.
I obviously don't think that anybody is dumb because of its nationality. That would be just..dumb.

You made a post in which you stated that America lead the cell tech, as Euro is using America/Asia phones. I simply replied noting that you forgot to mention that the global market leader of cell phones which is European.

Thats it.

Regarding the iphone, as said i think its simply a stunning product, and that its MMS lackness is not an issue for US, but it would be for Euro.

Quite simple, and even logic i would say.
