Mobile data on home network, auto switch on?

I travel quite a lot abroad, and usually switch off mobile / cellular data when travelling due to high roaming charges for data.

When I returned to the UK at the weekend, and took the phone off plane mode, it automatically re-enabled data when it connected to my home network (O2). It's never done that before. Turned off airplane mode and all my emails appeared out the blue.

Is this some new smart feature? or a bug? I'd hate to have it enabling mobile data when abroad without me realising.

You don't need to turn data off when traveling, disabling roaming does this for you. As for turning on automatically it shouldn't do.

You can't disable roaming as then you have no network abroad, all foreign networks need roaming to get calls and text.

I've forgotten to switch data off before, and getting emails through when landing in other countries in europe or the far east - with a data charge when I get my next bill.

Nope...if you disable "Data Roaming" it just stops the data side of things when abroad but you can still call or text. In theory under Mobile Data if you turn off Data Roaming and leave it off then you will never have to fiddle with settings again whilst going abroad as it will never give you a mobile data signal outside of your own network at home. Thats all i ever used to do and if for some reason i needed to use data whilst abroad you flick the data roaming switch back on whilst you use it then turn it off again.
