Mobile devices talking to one another

Anyone have a recommendation for a solution in a household with a coupla Macs, an Android phone and tablet (Galaxy), and an iPhone and iPad, where the users want to share files?

I don't have a NAS, but I could slap an unused hard drive into the USB port on an Airport Express. And I'd prefer an app or apps that would have similar capabilities among all devices. We just need to share some documents, photos, and other files. Contacts, calendars and all that is handled cloud-wise so that's not an issue.

This - I use all the free ones to get the most storage possible. Dropbox, Copy, Onedrive, Google Drive, Box.

I also pay for 20GB on iCloud Drive for my photo/video library.

Part of the reason I went back to iOS was the ability to easily share files via iMessage and AirDrop as well. PhotoStream works great for albums of pictures too.

Not too much of a fan of Google Drive. For example, I just had to restore from backup and rather than just reference and reconcile the existing files, I had to download everything again. SpiderOak, for example, doesn't do that.

And I should have mentioned this, but we'd prefer something local. All the devices have Dropbox, etc anyway. We want something we can keep on the LAN, or even peer to peer.

I think iOS will have trouble with any kind of local sync like that

bittorrent sync is popular with that use case on android

pushbullet will allow files to be pushed from device to device (not sure about filetypes on ios), but it is not really a storage solution

I use dropbox / onedrive personally

Thanks, but don't need anything that fancy. No push, no synch.

Seems I found it; Files United. You can connect in a multitude of ways: Webdav, ftp, smb, etc, and it will set up your iPad to server files as well.

Now I'll move on to the Android device and see if it can connect.

Oh yes you should be able to use one of many file managers

I use solid explorer and es file explorer, should connect you to just about anything

On ios I've found PDF expert and nplayer to connect to shared folders / play content well

Or Ifile if jailbroken
