mobile me: should I try, or not?

I am planning on getting a mac soon, and I also am planning on buying one year mobile me subcription for lower price.

The question is, should I actually try mobile me for 30 days before getting the boxed version?

Also, for anyone currently using mobile me, is it somewhat smoother now?

it's smooth as butter. I love it. I haven't had any issues, other than an error sending a message today, since launch. **NOTE: I got an error that it couldn't send the message, then I checked my sent log and it has successfully sent a message and I recieved a reply twenty minutes later. So I guess receiving said error was... an error.

MobileMe is great, I love the easy publishing of my albums and I can post the full 10.1 megapixel files online for my friends and family to download without a hitch.

EDIT: and as a pure personal preference sort of deal I like the interface of the mobileme web client more than the actual native apps living on my computer, so I often times use the web apps even when I'm sitting at my Mac. The only time I use the native apps is when there is some alarm or setting or something that can't be done through the web app.

Don't worry, just do the trial. If you don't like it then don't buy it, until they fix whatever issue you had with it. If you do like it then you had an extra 30 days free with it.

Depends what features you are planning on using

Email is very flaky, I got sent emails yesterday afternoon, all of them arrived at 5am this morning (good job they wernt urgent)
Web apps are very slow and not really neccesary if you are at your Mac, The apps on the Mac are much better and provide more features (Web Apps are very basic)
Awful support when using windows, you are recommended to update all windows machines to Safari/Firefox (IE7 does work, quick time needed for galleries)
iDisk is very slow (This has been on going for years)

If you also have an iPod Touch or an iPhone then I would say its definitely worth getting just to sync these devices, otherwise wait and see what happens

I would definitely take the free thirty days and make sure you A) like the service and B) are going to use it enough to make it worth the money. If you do decide you want to do it, go to Amazon or another reseller.

I haven't had any problems with the service. Email works great (I've only gotten delayed emails a couple of times), sync is really great for contacts and calendars (now that they've smoothed it out) and having the iDisk is a big plus for anyone that wants to share large files easily.

MobileMe has caused a lot of problems. My MB Pro would lock up if I had sync set to anything other than "manual". Idisk won't reliably mount on my iDisk. In the process of force quit and reboot to recover control of my laptop, other system prefs got corrupted. I'm near the point where I'll wipe the HD and reinstall to see if I can get a clean system, as new accounts I create on this computer have the same issue.

I have an iMac with no problems, so I can't say it's all bad. 10.5.5 is supposed to fix some of that, but I doubt it will be all rosy.

I agree with the comment that the web apps are nice. In fact, if you run them in a single-site browser window like Prism (for Firefox) or Fluid (for Safari) they are quite nice.

I'm bitter and angry about MobileMe and all the problems I lived with. I'm transitioning as much as I can to Google or other service providers. I can't find something to replace iDisk yet, but that's only working as advertised on one of my computers so it's no big deal if I can't find a direct replacement.

I am still waiting to try out the iDisk feature, which I will try out once my new Macbook Pro arrives....

For the most part, sometimes there are issues with it, but they get cleared up pretty quickly. And with all the bad press MobileMe has received lately I think it will be high on Apple's priorities to keep it up and running.

The syncing was pretty good until yesterday. My contacts aren't syncing anymore on both my touch and iphone. My email has been pretty good thus far. My trial hasn't been too bad.

Is there a way to manually sync? When I connect to iTunes, it says my contacts are being synced over the air...I wish we had an option.

From what I remember, If you turn off 'push' for all of MobileMe on your Touch/iPhone then the manual sync will be available again

Try it first before you buy.

I signed up for a trial yesterday morning and set it up on my MBP & iPhone. So far I am NOT impressed. The web interface is slow slow slow at work when other sites seem fine for me. Calendars do not sync at all, the info just stays where I put it and email does not push to my phone.

I've followed the instructions apple send out to get it setup but it hasn't worked and I rechecked everything this morning and its all correct.

I'll keep trying today but if no luck I'll be cancelling my trial. Every other product I've had has been great, but this just feels like a mashed together hunk of junk!
