I recently noticed that most of the time when I open links from email or other apps the Safari interface is broken.

- Amazon package status links come up as purely blank white pages
- Substack links give me the pop-up subscription page, but tapping on 'no thanks' does nothing

I also try opening these pages in 'full' Safari, same result

I open the link in Chrome - pages work as expected.

I have turned off AdGuard and deleted my VPN (which was inactive) and checked private relay (it was off).

For some reason I thought I had already changed the default browser to Chrome and that this was just Apple overriding my choice in certain scenarios. But, in fact, Safari was set to default browser. Changing this to Chrome fixes all of these issues.

But my question now is why, when both are based on WebKit, is the Apple browser now useless while the 3rd party browser works just fine?

iOS 17.6.1
iPhone 13
All apps auto-updated to latest

Amazon package status links open up fine for me in Safari. Don't use Substack.

Something is messed up in your system. That is not typical of Safari.

You can do that on mobile?

I am unaware of being able to do any of these things on mobile...
Yes you can. For Safari, you need to go to Settings app and tap Safari. For other browsers, check their browser settings usually denoted by gear or hamburger/triple line icon. Some browsers put settings near URL bar.
