It connects to services such as AIM, so:

It dos not use your SMS, but it will use your internet connection.
 
Good luck keeping them connected though. They like to go link dead, and no tell you. Your buddy list will show up fine, but never update, and never send or receive IMs. Basically, no one else sees you online, but your phone thinks it still is. Only way to check to see if you are actually online is by messaging someone with an auto response away message.

Cant wait for the SDK!!! Wont need to hack anymore :)
