As many of you will know, and I'm sure many haven't seen as a loss; MobileChat was removed from the app store recently. And while it wasn't always the most reliable app, when it has been working I've always found it to be very handy and have continued to use it.

When launched today, I was greeted with this message:
mobilechat.jpg

And sure enough, a message on the site states that v3.2 has been submitted to the app store, and 4.0 is "coming soon".

I'm sure many people will be reluctant to use MC again, given the temperamental performance of previous versions, but it will definitely be interesting to see how the new version(s) will compare against the likes of IM+ and BeeJive.

Thoughts?

The new owners will have a challenge in overcoming MobileChats negative image is the first thought that comes to mind, but if it is well publicized that MC is under new ownership and that it has been updated, a lot of people who previously downloaded the app will download it just to check it out (it's free to do so anyways), and if it is a solid app, it may win a good name back.

I would hope it's free to begin the process of making it up to those who lost out. The first was my all time worst app. To be fair I will wait and see.

If it'll be relaunched as a "new" app, does that mean existing owners such as myself will have to repay? Sounds like more of the same shadiness.

I really liked MC while it was working I'm glad someone else has taken over. I've been using Beejive ever since.

It'll be tough to win me back form beejive. I mean, I've paid for both but I'm not sure why I would even bother switching back to MC unless it's noticeably BETTER than beejive, which might be tough.

Oh no. I'm not going back. I'm waiting on the BeeJIVEIM $9.99 sale for 3.0 and I'll get that.

It was a shame it never worked out in the beginning... In my opinion MC had the right weigh up between professional look and simplicity.

Beejive is great in terms of how it works, but I can't help but feel whenever I use it that everything is a bit cluttered. The contacts list has waaaaay too many things on it; Too much contact info, too many icons. I like to keep it simple: Colour status, Picture, Name (Then go to profile if you need any more info than that).

If they can pull this off properly then I will probably return to MobileChat. Nice and simplistic, while still retaining a great look that fits in with the iPhone (a look that IM+ seems to lack in my opinion).

New Free Version Is Almost Here
MobileChat version 3.2 with full OS3.0 compatibility, a variety of functional updates, and a few features you just may like is submitted and on its way. Existing users, your version will continue to run, however in order to be included in future updates you must download this newest FREE version, now being marketed in the AppStore under Mobile Apps, Inc. (under new ownership) Be sure to submit your email so we can notify you when it becomes available!

Not showing up in the US store yet. I deleted my old copy but if this upgrade will be free for existing users I'll give it a shot.

EDIT: and it looks like that was posted in early August, so I'm not sure that means it's actually in the store now.
