I have MobileMe, which handles my calendar, mail, and contacts. But since I have also been an iTunes user for a lot longer, I have an AppleID I use for purchasing music and apps.

Apparently, one cannot simply merge these accounts. However, my understanding of iCloud means I won't be able to have auto-syncing of both of these. Am I missing something or am I completely screwed?

Also, Apple is in no way helpful in enlightening me to a resolution.

Regarding the two accounts issue, fret not!
I had the same problem, and called Applecare a few months ago when I decided I wanted to merge the accounts.
The short story is that they guided me through migrating all my purchases to the account I wanted to keep, and I trashed the other one.

The longer story is that the advice they gave me didn't work, and I ended up being billed for a second download of already purchased apps. But they refunded me the full amount immediately, so, to be honest, it was a pretty simple procedure.

…and it was all done with typical Apple charm and finesse.

So, as I see it, you and all the many others in this boat today have two choices:

1) Get in touch with iTunes support (via email initially) to transfer your stuff to the account you want to keep, or

2) Wait until the plan they have to migrate everyone over is published

Either way, it's not going to be a problem.

I had a strange experience with Apple Support a few years back when previously raising this issue. I contacted them, and they too said "yeah sure, thats fine, just tell us what account you want it merging to and provide some security info". When I replied with the details of what I wanted someone else replied with "uh no, we can't do that actually, you were told wrong".

Seems that you have had an issue with a confident person thinking they could sort it for you in the first place! It's good they got it resolved for you though.
