Hi guys, I could use a little help or insight into some of the features.

I have a gmail account, that I have as my email for important accounts (such as gas and hydro, as opposed to website logins etc), as well as the email address I give my immediate family members and friends to get in touch with me.

I also have my school email forwarded to my gmail account, so that I don't have to constantly check that all the time.

When I first signed up for MobileMe trial a few weeks ago, I set Gmail to forward a copy of ALL mail. This was working fine, as expected. I would get a copy of the mail in my MM inbox (and on my ipod touch).

The other day I took a look at the Gmail filters options, and decided to give them a try, as I was having to go to my Gmail and manually sort mail from my parents, friends, and school into their folders (I still want my gmail to be organized for when I do need to log into it, instead of everything just being in All Mail)

The problem I noticed today was... I have a filter for anything with the subject "Quarantined Spam Messages" to auto delete (which also checks skip inbox) because my school email get emails from the spam filter service constantly.

I checked my MobileMe mail today and one of the quarantined emails was in my inbox. I checked my Gmail and the behaviour on that end was as expected. It was in the trash.

I also have a problem where I will get duplicate email (when it is not from a family member etc that I set up a filter for) in my mobile me inbox, the first copy is timestamped the same as Gmail's single copy, and the other is delayed by about 30 minutes.

I thought perhaps I had set up something wrong on the Gmail end (even though within gmail it is doing what I would like) in combination with the forwarding.

Gmail is set to forward all emails, and archive the gmail copy.
Then most filters are set so that From "person's name" applies "appropriate label". The mail is then archived, not by the filter but by the forwarding option.

I hope this makes sense. I hope to have this fixed by september so that I don't have a ton of multiple emails when school starts. I know this is a bit long, but I wanted to be sure my settings were clear. Thanks

Gmail is set to forward all emails, and archive the gmail copy.
Gmail's "forward all mail" means exactly that: forward ALL mail. Everything.

If you do not want all mail fowarded, you need to disable global mail forwarding, and use a filter that only forwards the mail that you want forwarded. In this case, you need to create a filter that forwards all mail but the one with the quarantine subject. Note that, while gmail does normally allow an unlimited number of filters, there is a limit on the number of filters that forward email (it's something like 20-50). If you're forwarding mail, you may have to write complex filter rules, instead of multiple filter rules. For your example, I'd create a forwarding rule, and try putting the following into the "Has the words" field:
-subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages"
(The leading "-" is very important.)

Oh ok, I thought it might have something to do with conflicting filter/forwarding settings.

The thing is I do want everything forwarded, except for those quarantined messages. So if I set up a filter in gmail with -subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages" and check off forward to address ..... then ALL mail should be forwarded except those with subjects of 'quarantined spam messages' ??

If that is the case, then this should work for me for now.

I'm not sure why I was getting duplicates of some of the other emails, ones which didn't fall into any of my gmail filters.

Thank you :)

Well, I hope it works. :D Here are more detailed instructions:
  • Turn off global mail forwarding. If you don't, you're going to get duplicate messages, and you'll still get the messages that you don't want.
  • Create a new filter with the following in the "has the words" box:
    -subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages"
Yeah, it's a bit confusing, but you really do have to put this into the "Has the words" box.
  • Make the filter forward the messages to whatever account you want.
That should be it.

Now, here's an explanation of:
-subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages"
  • "-" Match messages that do not match ...
  • "subject:" Look in the subject line for the following ...
  • "Quarantined Spam Messages" Match this exact phrase (which can occur anywhere -- in the subject line, in this case).
So, the above rule basically says, ``Match all messages that do not have the phrase, "Quarantined Spam Messages", anywhere in the subject''.

Yep, thanks I did exactly that, except I put subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages" in the Does Not Have box. It created essentially the same filter, below it showed {-subject:"Quarantined Spam Messages"}

I will keep an eye out to see how it works over the next few days. Emails have been slower recently, I just didnt want to get bombarded with double mails and spam from my school account in two weeks when school starts.

thanks again
