I tried logging in this morning and MobileMe kept telling me my password was incorrect.

So I went to Apple's website to login to my account. After entering my user name and password it told me that my password has expired and that I need to enter a new one.

Is this real...? I've had .Mac/MobileMe for two years now and I've never had a password "expire" ... can anyone confirm if this has happened to them? I'm hesitent to enter my password or a new one at this point because I'm wondering if this is legitimate.

Further, if my password expired, why would MobileMe simply say "incorrect password," requiring me to go to Apple's website...? Makes no sense.

Thanks

Same problem

I have the same problem this morning. When I try to login to mobileme on the web, I get a message that says the password or id is incorrect. I am using the correct id and password, however.

Yes... and considering the fact that my mail retrieves fine on my iPhone, using the old password, really makes me think it has to be an issue on their end...

Indeed, one might expect better from a paid service (especially when there are many competitors who offer a higher level of service for free).

I have had the same problem in the UK today - cannot login as apparently my password is incorrect.

I had the same problem. Only logging on was affected. I could check email with mail program and use features on iphone. Changing my password worked. Trying to change to the original said it was too short. I found this:

Has Apple turned off MobileMe users with short passwords

"Word is coming in from Europe that Apple is forcing users with under eight characters and without both a number and a letter to reset their passwords today. The mandate is an invisible one and some users who don’t meet the criteria are just getting empty login failures. The fix is easy. Just head over to the MobileMe and reset your password to one with the appropriate strength.

IMAP Mail and other native applications will not have been affected."

I should add that to change the password I had to enter the "forgot my password" routine. There was no message saying there is a need to change the password. After answering the security questions I chose to renew by sending my old password since I wasn't sure what was going on at that point. Why was my password not working? The email gave me a link to resent my password. It all went smoothly.
