Hello all, hope someone can help.
I have about a hundred contacts in my address book on my mac and have been using mobile me to sync them with my iPhone. Until a few days ago all was working fine but in the last few days several of my contacts seem to be duplicating themselves at random. There are about 250 extra copies of about 15 or so contacts.
I used the 'check for duplicates' function in address book to reduce them back down but no matter what I do, the contacts list in mobile me wont accept the changes, and therefore niether will my phone. I even went through them one by one in mobile me on the web and deleted the extras manualy but the phone wouldn't sync and two hours later they were all back in mobile me. It's getting me down, (I did'nt realise I was this fastidious.)
At this point I am willing to start again from scratch using my back up address book, but I'm scared that these errant duplicates will appear from somewhere and wreek yet more havoc on my lovely clean system.

I too have noticed some duplication from time to time, it hasn't been as annoying as to cause me to spend much time on it. In our case I sync 4 Macs, 3 iPhones and an iPad. I had thought that some setting on of these was the the problem.

I checked my contacts today, usually just use favorites, and noticed that I have a lot of duplicates and even some triplicates, on the ones that have triples, the number for the last one is wrong.... Well actually someone else's number from my contacts. Even one of my friend's number has the 1800myapple as his number. WTF MobileMe?!?!

Sync issue with MobileMe

I'm having a similar problem, except three of my computers and mobileMe are getting the data in triplicate...or more...with two iPhones having no issue??(one iPhone is running iOS 4) Frustrating.

One of the computers is still operating Leopard, while two are on Snow Leopard (one Snow Leopard machine has the most current update)

I've tried resetting my sync data, but it keeps happening. In fact, I've methodically cleaned up my iCal, synced MobileMe and then synced all the other computers. It's fine for a little while, but sure enough i'll turn on my computer to find 2,500 sync conflicts with iCal?? It's to the point now that MobileMe sync is set to manual and my office is writing or emailing meeting times and notes to be entered manually on all the devices...

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I've had the same problem today as well.

Duplicated contacts, wrong numbers thought i could just go in and fix it by deleting the wrong ones.

I'm going to try to restore from a previous back up file, then zap the server data from the computer, here goes nothing.

I'll update in a few

:UPDATE:

Doing the restore from previous back up and then reseting the sync data from the computer to the server fixed it.

Seems like a possible bug in 4.0

Rejoice a fix has been found. :D

I just tried to sync contacts with Mobileme 3 days ago and it dumped about 80,000 blank contacts into my Outlook contacts file. I reinstalled itunes, reset the sync history and just put one contact in my Outlook file to see if that was the problem. The same thing happened over and over again. I have done everything in the support help file on Apple and nothing works. I am SO sorry I ever got an iphone.

Be sure contact syncing is UNCHECKED in iTunes for your iPhone or iPad. Some times you need to toggle it twice for it to actually remove duplicates from your device.

This is not necessarily the cause of every duplicate, but it is one possibility to check out.

You should also be able to get help at Apple support. They're usually very quick and helpful with things such as this. Dial 611 from your iPhone.
